Why is Flag Day celebrated on June 14? On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the "Stars and Stripes" as the original American flag. The same flag was used when the Declaration of Independence was signed to give a flag for the entire country rather than each state having their own. What is flag etiquette on Flag Day? Traditionally, the flag can only be flown from sunrise to sunset. It can only be flown at night if it is properly illuminated. When lowering the flag in the evening, it should be done in a ceremonious manner where the flag is honored. During the hoisting or lowering of the flag or when it passes in parade or review, Americans should stand at attention facing the flag and place their right hand over the heart. What are the American flag rules? While most people know the general idea to not let the flag touch the ground, there are a number of other rules for displaying the flag throughout the year. Do not let the flag touch the ground. Do not fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency. Do not carry the flag flat, or carry things in it. Do not use the flag as clothing. Do not store the flag where it can get dirty. Do not use it as a cover. Do not fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free. Do not draw on, or otherwise mark the flag. Do not fly the flag in bad weather, unless you are 100% certain it is an all- weather flag.

Happy Flag Day! Care and handling of the American flag is steeped in tradition and respect. There is a right way and a wrong way to display the Stars and Stripes. This is called Flag Etiquette. The American flag should be held in the highest regard. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. 🔴The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset. ⚪In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously. 🔵Do not fly it at night without a light on it. 🔴Do not fly it in rainy or inclement weather. ⚪After a tragedy or death, fly it at half-staff for 30 days. It’s called “half staff” on land, and “half mast” on a ship. 🔵When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field, or “union”, is at the top and the end of the pole (away from your house). 🔴Always fly it at the top of the pole. Your state flag and others fly below it. ⚪The union is always on top. In print, the stars and blue field is always on the left. 🔵Never let your flag touch the ground, never…period. 🔴Fold your flag when storing. Don’t just stuff it in a drawer or box. ⚪When it is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Burn or bury them. Please do not throw it in the trash. 🔵Do not disrespect it in any manner.

⚓ AIS Spoofing event ⚓ I've always maintained that "cyber warfare" is a misnomer and instead what we have is "cyber in support of warfare." My good friend Dr. Gary C. Kessler is on the forefront of the dangers presented by AIS Spoofing, and this piece is alarming. Per MARAD: "(AIS) open, unencrypted, and unprotected radio systems (are) intended to operate on non-secure VHF-FM channels. As such, AIS signals can be spoofed, resulting in incorrect or missing AIS data." Gary has pointed out to me that the Vietnam War escalated largely because US Sonar Techs detected what they believed was multiple incoming unidentified vessels on radar, which later turned out to be anomalies due to weather. By the time the mistake was cleared up, it was too late and the US escalation was in motion. See https://lnkd.in/dN-QbR5c for more info. Similarly, AIS spoofing could intentionally provoke anxiety and actions by presenting false information. It has already been used to misrepresent positions for the purposes of illegal fishing and covert operations. #MaritimeCyber #CyberLeadership
