Utah announces grants for processors From an article in MeatingPlace by Melissa Sue Sorrells Article excerpts: "The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food on Wednesday announced it has awarded $3 million in grants to address critical deficiencies in Utah’s food supply chain. Now in its third year, the Utah Food Security Processing Grant supports the expansion of small meat, poultry, fruit, and vegetable processors, with 50% of the funds earmarked for meat and poultry processing. In 2024, the USAF awarded 60 grants to businesses located throughout the state. Recipients include 101 Custom Meats, Circle V Meat, Davis Custom Meats, Final Cut Meats and Utah Beef Producers. The grants cover expenses including processing equipment, coolers/freezers, contractor costs, portion cutters and slaughter equipment, among other items. To be eligible, companies must have no more than 100 employees and either use 51% ingredients from Utah or sell at least 51% of their product in Utah. They must also have a state-inspected “equal-to” slaughter and/or processing plant, licensed custom-exempt slaughter plant or a small federally inspected plant."
