Happy to share a new article in collaboration with Tomas during our stay at ETH Zurich! The article discusses the interaction of vermicompost with labeled N and P fertilizers, and how adding a small organic fraction together with mineral fertilizers can affect the nutrient use efficiency. Highlights: -Adding low quantities of vermicompost together with mineral fertilizers reduces phosphorus movement in soil. -Lower P mobility in soil caused by vermicompost is linked to reduced phosphorus uptake by Italian ryegrass. -Vermicompost has potential as an organic matrix for organo-mineral fertilizers with low organic C content
New publication! A new article from my doctoral work has just been published. The article discusses the interaction of vermicompost with labeled N and P fertilizers, and how adding a small organic fraction together with mineral fertilizers can affect the nutrient use efficiency. The research was carried out at The Research Station for Plant Sciences Lindau at ETH Zurich with the supervision of Oberson Astrid. I thank the co-authors of this article (Pietro Sica, Laura Zavattaro, Barbara Moretti, Carlo Grignani, and Oberson Astrid) for their valuable contributions. #FertiCycle #Horizon2020 https://lnkd.in/d2T3BZpK

Hear from Dr Stephan Freyer, Senior Research Manager, Chemical Engineering Industrial Biotechnology of BASF as he presents on "Chemicals from renewable raw materials” at the 7th EU Starch Value Chain conference (15-17 October 2024, Berlin) along with other discussions surrounding the theme "Optimising starch full value chains in the EU”. 7th EU Starch Value Chain covers a full value-chain approach discussing issues from innovations in seeds to achieve better yields, transition towards sustainable farming system to the agility of starch biorefineries that produce a wide variety of ingredients serving all bioeconomy outlets, enabling the sector to be near zero-waste. Proteins produced by the EU starch industry (e.g. cereal crop- maize, wheat, barley, and rice), peas and starch potatoes are valuable components that will significantly contribute to the competitiveness of the EU starch industry. In its continuous research effort to valorise the whole plant, the EU starch industry has developed outlets for plant-based protein products and their Innovative functionalities. NaturalShrimp, Inc. (OTCQB: SHMP)., a #biotechnology #aquaculture company, has announced it has completed a successful six-month trial in Japan with its #patented #electrocoagulation (EC) and Hydrogas™ technologies. The trial compared a #tank treated by the EC and Hydrogas with a tank treated by a traditional #biofilter. During the trial, the EC effectively removed the #ammonia from the #water and the #shrimp growth rate increased during the presence of Hydrogas when compared to the shrimp #growthrate in the tank treated only by the biofilter. Exciting times at Phinite as the company moves into their next-generation fertilizer manufacturing facility in Turkey, NC. This repurposed 69,000 square foot facility will significantly increase Phinite's organic fertilizer production capacity, create new jobs in North Carolina, and begin tackling the critical issues of swine waste removal/remediation and sustainable production of phosphorous-rich organic fertilizer. Additionally, the company will soon leverage over $12mm of recent commitments from local farmers to build multiple distributed swine waste drying systems across North Carolina. These distributed facilities are the first step of Phinite's proprietary process of converting hog waste into organic fertilizer. Not all phosphate rock types are suitable as a Direct Application Phosphate Rock (DAPR). But fear not! Our fine lower grade reactive phosphate rock is available from July 2024, which is very suitable as a direct application phosphate rock (DAPR) in the correct application. 🤝 We're proud to announce our partnership with Stellenbosch University to study the suitability of our Elandsfontein fine phosphate rock as an organic P fertilizer in South Africa. Together, we're exploring its utilisation with other organic materials and acidulated fertilizers, ensuring maximum agricultural impact. 🌐 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲! The very fine physical nature of this product, 60% < 25 micron, creates the opportunity to extrude and pelletise this product for potential bulk loading and transportation. KROPZ, together with VERDES - Talleres Felipe Verdés from Spain has successfully produced stable phosphate pellets (6mm) on pilot plant scale without the use of binders - ensuring the product retains its original unaltered characteristics. 🔬 Interested in testing our fine phosphate product further? We've got you covered! Sufficient quantities are available for interested parties to conduct further test in research fields yet to be explored by KROPZ. Join us in revolutionising agriculture for a sustainable future! 🌍 #KROPZ #FertilizerInnovation #Sustainability #AgriculturalRevolution #PhosphateRock #GreenTech #ResearchPartnership #StellenboschUniversity #Verdes #Agribusiness #EnvironmentalImpact #FutureOfFarming

Last week I wrote a newsletter on seaweed biorefining, alginates and fucoidans. Some people wrote back with comments and additions. Daniel Gajardo wrote in to say he started a biorefinery in Chile called Coral Bio, which led me to discover another South American entrant, Algaetech Biorrefinaria in Brazil. Jason Mitchell reminded me of Biotic, which lived in my head as a bioplastics company, but on checking my notes, yes, it is a biorefinery approach. Alan Critchley wrote in as usual with a bit of history: pioneering fucoidan researchers like Jim Craigie preferred the term FCP - fucose containing polymers, and he shared me his paper on fucoidans as a treatment... for snake bites! Finally, Jon Funderud wrote in to question if biorefinery is really a useful term, especially when asking about Chinese capacities, where this word is perhaps not in use. In my opinion it is still a useful word, because a) it marks a departure from a single-product extraction method and b) it's a word that allows people to imagine what a future bioeconomy might look like, where seaweeds and other plants become a replacement for oil as the feedstock of choice for the chemical industry.
