We’re excited to support the launch of Reporting Matters 2024, the annual review of corporate sustainability reporting from the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), developed in collaboration with Radley Yeldar. This year’s theme, “Changing Gears: How are companies navigating higher expectations and demands in sustainability reporting?", will provide valuable insights and strategies for businesses like Sappi to meet these new challenges head-on. The report will offer comprehensive insights from 181 corporate reports, exploring best practices, key developments, and strategies for companies in the paper and packaging industry. Besides Sappi's active engagement in the WBCSD's Forest Solutions Group, Sappi recognises that broader sustainable transformation requires multi-industry, cross-functional collaboration to ensure the right tools and roadmaps can be activated for the benefit of climate, nature and equity. 🎙️ Don’t miss the chance to hear from experts during the launch webinars on 7 & 8 November. 🔗 Register at the link in the comments section below.

‘Take-make-use-dispose’ isn’t sustainable anymore, with the global economy consuming 70% more raw materials than it can replenish. If consumers can already see the bigger picture, so should business. At Sappi, we maximise the value from trees, providing the opportunity to create innovative bio-based products and alternative energy sources. Read about why Misa Bursac, Sappi Europe’s VP Innovation and R&D, believes the circular economy is good for business – plus other steps Sappi is taking towards building a bio-based circular economy. The innovation from shifting to a circular economy can generate 700,000 jobs in the EU alone by 2030 on some estimates. Sappi already employs more than 11,000 people around the world. Our woodfibre-based resources already help customers reduce the use of plastics and fossil-based materials. We use cellulose and other woodfibre components to create renewable alternatives to plastic in barriers, coatings and product formulations – combining positive sustainable outcomes with first-class performance. Find out plenty more about the business benefits of the circular economy in the latest article by Misa Bursac, VP Innovation and R&D at Sappi Europe ¬– link in the comments ⬇. The 16th Biodiversity COP, starting today, comes at a critical moment where countries across the globe need to show how they plan to protect at least 30% of the world's land and water, and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. We have consistently prioritised biodiversity conservation through careful forest management and design. Rather than just accepting simplistic narratives and labels like: “planted forests are green deserts". This excellent piece in the Daily Maverick may help explain why plantations and natural forests need to co-exist in a multi-functional, varied landscape that protects endangered species while meeting modern timber needs. Global Ethics Day marked its 11th year on 16 October 2024 – a day that encourages individuals, businesses and organisations to set a code of conduct that will improve lives, benefit society and build a better world for all. It’s also the perfect time to share a reminder to our Sappi staff worldwide about the importance of our own Code of Ethics in guiding our behaviour. In line with Sappi’s strategy and commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, our colleagues in South Africa were invited to sign a pledge to reinforce their loyalty to our core standards. Our teams in Europe and in North America will be invited to sign the pledge soon. For Sappi’s business strategy to be successful, it needs to be underpinned by a set of principles that drive our actions across many countries and jurisdictions. Our Code of Ethics communicates to our staff, customers and stakeholders the details on how we should act to ensure we make smart decisions - carried out with integrity and courage. ‘The Code is central to our reputation, which lies at the heart of our success.’ says Sappi Group CEO Steve Binnie. ‘We need to ensure that everything we do builds and protects that reputation. By behaving under the Code, we create a supportive, positive atmosphere that builds morale and enhances our reputation.’ A commitment to behaving ethically is more crucial than ever. Thank you to our colleagues for pledging to uphold our principles of integrity and courage every day. #EthicsInBusiness #EthicalBehaviour

It’s nearly 2025 and there is still no single labelling system to help consumers make sustainable decisions when purchasing paper or packaging – nor to ensure they recycle efficiently. We believe industry collaboration is the answer. That’s why we’re working with industry associations such as 4evergreen alliance – which is aiming for a 90% recycling rate for fibre-based packaging by 2030 – and pushing for harmonised regulations and standards to benefit the entire paper industry. It’s true – trees really do have the power to change our everyday world for the better.🌱 Whether that’s paper replacing plastic in supermarket packaging or fibre-based solutions reimagining how we make cosmetics. There are numerous problems that come with our addiction to consumer convenience today – and we can solve many of them by using renewable, recyclable fibre-based products in place of fossil-derived materials. Check out the ideas that our colleague Matt Spence shares on the subject: https://brnw.ch/21wNM19 💡 We need to innovate for a more sustainable future. Don’t you agree? #sustainability #renewable #sappi
