The innovation from shifting to a circular economy can generate 700,000 jobs in the EU alone by 2030 on some estimates. Sappi already employs more than 11,000 people around the world. Our woodfibre-based resources already help customers reduce the use of plastics and fossil-based materials. We use cellulose and other woodfibre components to create renewable alternatives to plastic in barriers, coatings and product formulations – combining positive sustainable outcomes with first-class performance. The 16th Biodiversity COP, starting today, comes at a critical moment where countries across the globe need to show how they plan to protect at least 30% of the world's land and water, and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.   We have consistently prioritised biodiversity conservation through careful forest management and design. Global Ethics Day marked its 11th year on 16 October 2024 – a day that encourages individuals, businesses and organisations to set a code of conduct that will improve lives, benefit society and build a better world for all.     It’s also the perfect time to share a reminder to our Sappi staff worldwide about the importance of our own Code of Ethics in guiding our behaviour. In line with Sappi’s strategy and commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, our colleagues in South Africa were invited to sign a pledge to reinforce their loyalty to our core standards. Our teams in Europe and in North America will be invited to sign the pledge soon.    For Sappi’s business strategy to be successful, it needs to be underpinned by a set of principles that drive our actions across many countries and jurisdictions. Our Code of Ethics communicates to our staff, customers and stakeholders the details on how we should act to ensure we make smart decisions - carried out with integrity and courage.      ‘The Code is central to our reputation, which lies at the heart of our success.’ says Sappi Group CEO Steve Binnie. ‘We need to ensure that everything we do builds and protects that reputation. It’s nearly 2025 and there is still no single labelling system to help consumers make sustainable decisions when purchasing paper or packaging – nor to ensure they recycle efficiently. We believe industry collaboration is the answer. That’s why we’re working with industry associations such as 4evergreen alliance – which is aiming for a 90% recycling rate for fibre-based packaging by 2030 – and pushing for harmonised regulations and standards to benefit the entire paper industry.
