Understanding GMOs and hybrids is crucial for agriculture. Dr. Eliud Kireger from KALRO and Prof. Theoplius Mutui from KEPHIS explain that GMOs involve genetic alterations for traits like drought tolerance and pest resistance, while hybrids result from crossbreeding to combine desirable traits, such as higher yield and uniformity. Hybrids, like maize varieties 614 and Katumani, offer benefits but also come with higher costs and require more inputs compared to traditional seeds. #GMOMaize #Hybrid #Genetic #DroughtTolerance #Katumani

Our paper is out! Pearl millet is an important staple crop in Africa and India, but yield is threatened by the parasitic weed Striga. We sequenced the genomes of a resistant and a susceptible pearl millet and found a crucial gene that makes a big difference. Plant breeders can now aim for the resistant allele, and soon introduce more resistant cultivars to both commercial farming and smallholder farmers. https://lnkd.in/eRGBt39X

Food security: Researchers discover gene for resistance against a disease that ravages rice and wheat crops. Blast disease, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is a veritable plague in agriculture. In addition to devastating rice crops—the staple food of 60% of the world's population—it began attacking wheat in the 1980s, across a growing area of distribution and with a serious risk of emergence in many countries. https://lnkd.in/gJFRdv8z

An Agric. Consultant & a Writer 💚 (PhD Student in Agricultural Economics and Environmental Policy) Adequate Food Production & Proper Waste Mgt. Pls 🙏
In the broad sense (sensu lato) this can include all types of control involving the use of living organisms, so that, in addition to the use of predators, parasites, and disease causing pathogens (biological control – sensu stricta), one can include sterilization, genetic manipulation, use of pheromones, and the use of resistant varieties of crop plant. #Plants/AnimalsPestsandDiseases

Red leaf blotch (RLB) is a serious foliar disease that causes blotching, necrosis and defoliation on #soybean. The causal fungus, Coniothyrium glycines is native to Africa and causes yield losses of over 50%. The pathogen is one of the two fungal species listed in the USDA select agents and toxins. We are exited to present our first research findings on diversity of the pathogen. In collaboration with Rachel Koch and Steve Clough of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and support from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Experience ORISE and Soybean Innovation Lab among other partners, we sequenced the ITS region and identified a total of 28 single nucleotide polymorphisms and 23 haplotypes among 96 isolates Understanding patterns of genetic diversity can play an important role in assessing the durability of disease control measures once they are developed. https://lnkd.in/g-vmJ2gy.

"Through development of a whole-genome typing schema, we identified 10 pathogenic lineages with broad geographic distributions, dated their origins, and mapped their movements between countries. We identified genomic changes associated with the emergence of these lineages and investigated their origins. We also considered the impact of pathogenicity on broader evolutionary dynamics, the ongoing diversification of pathogenic lineages, and how farming practices may have contributed to these processes." #zoonosis #infectiousdiseases https://lnkd.in/d9uaK3tA
