Global farmed fish production overtakes wild catch for first time 5 key takeaways from this article: 1. The global shift from wild fish capture to aquaculture-dominated production reflects a significant transformation in the seafood industry, potentially impacting international trade and supply chain dynamics. 2. The surge in aquaculture, primarily concentrated in Asia, highlights a regional shift in production that could influence global trade patterns and necessitate adjustments in trade agreements and financing. 3. The criticism regarding the depletion of wild fish stocks for aquaculture feed underscores the need for sustainable sourcing practices, which could become a pivotal aspect of trade regulations and finance terms. 4. The FAO’s projections for increased aquaculture production to meet rising global protein demand indicate potential growth opportunities for trade financiers in the seafood sector. 5. The evolution of feed formulations in aquaculture, reducing reliance on wild-caught fish and increasing use of vegetable-based feeds, suggests a shift towards more sustainable practices that could impact trade finance decisions related to environmental compliance and sustainability criteria. #seafood #exportfactoring #tradefinance

As I sift through the multitude of newsletters and articles that flood my inbox, I find myself pondering a crucial question: How is the world addressing the critical issues on a macro scale, and what actions are being taken on a micro level? Fish farming often gets criticized—for its environmental impact, for the welfare of the fish, and even for the quality of our diets. While aquaponics is often touted as a better alternative, it falls short when it comes to meeting the ever-growing demand for both fresh produce and fish. A stark example is the situation in Canada, where the government has mandated the removal of all Salmon net pen "cage" farms, forcing the industry—worth billions of dollars and supporting thousands of jobs across hundreds of communities—to either move operations onto land or face extinction. This industry, built over 70+ years, risks being dismantled with the stroke of a pen. However, there may be a more balanced approach: [Two Sask First Nations Pursue Food Sovereignty with New Agriculture Project] (https://lnkd.in/dTibcrKG) We cannot have our cake and eat it too. The food production and supply chains have been broken for at least a decade. Disrupting vital production and supply chains in the short term will lead to disaster. Instead, by adopting, adapting, and improving these systems in the medium term, we can safeguard the environment, food security, jobs, and the entire supply chain. What has been built over a century cannot be turned upside down and reconfigured overnight. Many protests against various food production methods seem to be more about opposition for opposition's sake, offering little in the way of constructive alternatives or solutions to the pressing question of where our food will come from. As a Tilapia Industry Specialist with nearly 40 years of experience, I've closely observed the sector's development and needs. I've found workable solutions to the pressing question of where our fish will come from in the future. The answer lies in small-scale producers, who will also grow much of their household's fresh vegetables. Keen to engage further see www.tilapiafarming.co.za Regards David

Global temperature change continues to pose significant challenges around the world. For example, within the aquaculture industry, climate change has contributed to mass harvest deaths within salmon farms. However, aquaculture industry practices, such as densely packed farms, creates increased risk for mass scale harvest deaths from the spread of disease or lice breakouts within these tight spaces. Although less crowed salmon pens would help to reduce the spread of disease, the lack of profitability pushes many aquaculture farms to make difficult choices, given the current advancements within this industry. Dasha Afanasieva and Stephen Treloar from Bloomberg highlight how the salmon farming sector faces a set of challenges to remain profitable and environmentally sustainable. According to Stephen Hawthorne, technological advances within this industry require a level of risk to avoid mass harvest, remain environmentally sustainable, and profitable for aquaculture farmers. As aquaculture demand continues to rise, the need to investigate innovative ideas continue to grow as these farms attempt to combat the modern threats that place their livelihood at risk. #climatechange #aquaculture #salmonfarming #environmentalsustainability #technologicaladvancements #globalchallenges #diseasecontrol #innovativesolutions #profitability #sustainablefarming #foodsecurity #riskmanagement #globalwarming #industrychallenges #futureoffood #environmentalimpact #sustainabledevelopment #foodsystems #climateadaptation #resourcemanagement https://lnkd.in/eERHfffz

As the backbone of aquaculture operations, feed expenses have reached unprecedented levels, placing immense financial strain on producers and, ultimately, impacting seafood availability for consumers worldwide. The escalating cost of feed not only burdens aquaculture businesses but also raises concerns about the industry's long-term sustainability and resilience. With seafood being a vital protein source for millions, this challenge underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to maintain a stable and secure supply of fish and seafood products. #AquacultureIndustry #SeafoodSupply #SustainableSolutions #FeedAffordability https://lnkd.in/d-GaHrAR

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture is deeply concerned about the federal government's decision to ban open net pen salmon farms in BC coastal waters by 2029. This move threatens a key food supply, which provides 400 million meals annually, and risks over $1.2 billion in economic output, including 500 Indigenous jobs. The CFA believes this will undermine future investments in Canadian agriculture, impacting food security and the economic prospects of farmers and coastal communities. CFA President Keith Currie emphasized in our recent press release the importance of salmon farming for national food security and sustainable protein sources, calling for longer-term stability to support the sector’s recovery and growth. See CFA’s press release https://lnkd.in/epQhNniJ The CFA urges the government to base decisions on scientific evidence and work collaboratively to ensure the prosperity of the agricultural industry. #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #SustainableFarming #EconomicImpact #SalmonFarming #Aquaculture #BCSalmon Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance
