A big thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our collaborative workshop and made our first biofibres event a success! It was filled with insightful discussions from a diverse range of attendees, from farmers and researchers to product manufacturers and construction industry professionals. A special shout-out to our brilliant speakers: Matthew Butler and Liam McPartland from Harrison Spinks Heather Oldfield from Elsoms Seeds Ltd Jonathan Hunter, PhD from FET - Fibre Extrusion Technology Sam Baumber from IndiNature Your contributions were invaluable in kickstarting our discussion about the opportunities and challenges surrounding biofibres. We delved into key topics such as: 🌿 the potential of biofibres to not only decarbonise industries and create new jobs but also provide healthier work and home environments 🌿 scaling up production and driving market demand for biofibre products 🌿 the need for regional and national collaboration between farmers, processors, and manufacturers 🌿 government backing and incentives to support the biofibre industry 🌿 the importance of educating specifiers and consumers about the benefits of biofibres. 🛠️ Last summer, I was invited to a workshop in #Hungary to discuss a proposed carbon capture and storage #CCS project at a #Biorefinery near the #Danube. It was quite interesting, given that low cost carbon capture at biorefineries in the #UnitedStates is catalysing #CO2 infrastructure development. It is worth noting that existing #Biogenic point source emissions in the #EU are around 180 Mt/year and are simply vented into the atmosphere. 🏭💨 💰For context, capturing the high purity streams of CO2 can be done with costs of between $18-$33 per tonne, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). 💡The thing is, in #Europe, there’s no tax or incentive on emitting biogenic #CO2, while in the US, there is an incentive to capture and store these emissions through the #45Q tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The Danube Removals Project is a full chain #CCS project that will aim to permanently store 500,000 tonnes of CO2 in an onshore aquifer. The selection of this project for funding under the #InnovationFund is a major step in the right direction, and hopefully the beginning of deployment at the low-cost, low-hanging fruit installations across Europe. Wood gas based combined heat and power products (wood gas CHPs) can not only generate electricity and heat from wood chips on 24/7 basis, but also convert around 10-12% of those wood chips into high quality biochar. Biochar then is used to improve soil conditions for sustainable farming. Thanks to the tireless work of our engineers and our operations team, we have deployed our Gen5 machine to process waste corn stover from the harvest in the Texas panhandle. Each day we are pushing throuput closer to the rated capacity while integrating biochar spreading and incorporation solutions to meet farmers needs. In the coming weeks, two additional machines will join this one to form the first operational fleet of mobile, on-the-fly biochar production machines in the world. By eliminating biomass and biochar transport, we are able to produce biochar at a cost that makes sense to broad acre agriculture AND large scale carbon removal buyers. #biochar #carbonremoval #cdr #regenerativeag #soilhealth

I would respectfully go one step further than Reja Sabet. Carbon capture and UTILIZATION (#ccu) are far more attractive than pipelines, particular for sites like #ethanol plants with large amounts of very pure #bioCO2. CCU means more revenues, lower carbon ethanol, no eminent domain required, no pipeline required, and no complex new infrastructure. Don't believe the nonsense that pipelines are the only solution! CCU is a far better future for #greenfuel, #greenmaterials, and #climatesmartagriculture.

One thing I would like to see #biochar added to is the lining of storm water run off ponds, road side ditches and holding ponds to reduce the heavy metals and contamination ending up in our waterways. There are so many applications that it is mind boggling that feedstock and process change the end result of the "same" product so drastically. Can we work together to come up wth a better naming convention for #biochar so users can better understand where it should be used? From #mobile #pyrolysis to large waste to energy systems we can help find the best solution.
