Are random scattered bikes a good thing for bike-sharing startups? Context: - Riders who discard their bike away from a parking bay are charged $5 - Riders who opt to collect a discarded bike are given no incentive I assume Anywheel and Hello Ride get government fines for misplaced bikes. Especially in Singapore where having an orderly city is prioritised. As a rider I never opt for stray bikes for three reasons: - discarded bikes can be in poor condition and there is only 1 so I have no choice to compare the quality  - I usually get city bikes with a friend so 1 bike isn't useful - I have no $ incentive to pick up a discarded bike Possible solution: - Incentivise riders to ride and re-park stray bikes using the $5 fine arbitrage.  - Give the new rider $1 credit upon successful parking of the bike in a parking bay (may also promote future usage if credit is banked) My assumption might be wrong: - the company may not get fined for strays - strays might reduce time-to-vehicle if bikes are naturally scattered

Startup of the week: Is everything all right in the cab hailing world? Not really. #NammaYatri has been the talk of the town and more so for the revolutionary Zero commission model. They are termed as #ola #uber killer I used Namma Yatri for the entire last 1 week for office travel (HSR Layout to Diamond district) and the cancellation rate is almost 50% post acceptance (especially for long rides). Also, the acceptance rate of #uber and #ola has reduced significantly (could only get 1 ride out of 14 attempts) Namma Yatri seems like a supplier focused company unlike the incumbents who were demand focused. - Zero commission model is great, protects surge pricing to the largest (though not 100% percent, nammayatri promotes tipping to get rides faster) - It takes the burden off the auto and cab drivers by a subscription model which effectively leads to 80-90% savings in commission. - In the supplier's dominant business, the person on the driver seat (no pun intended) is the primary decision maker. - It's up to the driver to decide which trip to opt for and not, they can cancel anytime without any penalty. - More or less, it has become like the old days where auto drivers used to charge based on meters and could reject you "Outright" :). - A lot of auto drivers are opting for offline rides from the tech parks as they all flocked to Namma Yatri and there is no alternative. What can be done to balance the ecosystem rather than making a supplier focused ecosystem ? - Add a minimum number of rides (even better if it's minimum number of kilometers) for all drivers on an active day. - Add cancellation penalty on the drivers if cancelled after 60 seconds of acceptance. (#Swiggy model) - Minimum number of days to be mandatory active on the platform in a month. #Bangalore already has a lot of traffic problems and issues like this will only add more private vehicles on the road and tech parks leading to more traffic and less parking space. An ecosytem can only sustain if it's a win win for everyone. A sound governance will be required to match the supply and demand.
