22 March 2024 (week 1) The process of deciding on the study area and planning strategies for our site visit involved meticulous planning and strategic thinking. Initially, we engaged in comprehensive discussions and evaluations to identify the most suitable study area, considering factors such as ecological significance, accessibility, and research objectives. After careful deliberation, we collectively agreed on Pantai Batu Hitam, a location that suitable for Speacial Area Plan (SAP). With the study area determined, our next step was to meticulously plan our site visit strategies. This included outlining specific research objectives, designing data collection methodologies, and scheduling logistical arrangements such as transportation and accommodations. Additionally, we developed strategies for engaging with local stakeholders and experts, aiming to gather firsthand insights and expertise relevant to our research goals. By methodically planning our approach to both the study area selection and site visit strategies, we ensured a structured and effective process that will underpin the success and comprehensiveness of our research efforts. This proactive approach not only enhances our understanding of the study area but also sets the stage for informed decision-making and meaningful contributions to environmental conservation and management.

Urgent Environmental Alert: Malaysia Faces Rising Threat from Illegal Dumpsites In an alarming revelation, Malaysia uncovered over 59 illegal dumpsites in Putrajaya in 2023 alone, highlighting a critical and growing environmental issue. The Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming disclosed that the closure of 2,093 illegal dumpsites last year resulted in a staggering clean-up cost of RM1.6 million. This, however, represents only the tip of the iceberg as hundreds more sites were subsequently discovered in Johor Bahru and Iskandar Puteri, signaling a deeper crisis. These sites are eyesores and epicenters of environmental decay, severely affecting ecosystems, wildlife, and the health of local communities. The presence of hazardous materials in solid waste poses a silent but deadly threat, necessitating immediate and concerted efforts to address the challenge. As professionals dedicated to sustainability and environmental protection via art, we must explore innovative solutions. Call for Volunteers for Next Phase Focused Cleaning in Full Swing All the affected areas, including Sentosa Tanjong beach, have entered the second phase of the clean-up response, which focuses on difficult-to-clean areas like rock bunds, breakwaters, and oil trapped deeper in the sand. The cleaning methods for the second phase are decided jointly by the oil spill consultants and cleaning contractors. These methods will be adapted and refined as required, as the shoreline features of affected areas may differ. For biodiversity-sensitive sites, to minimise impact, strategies such as allowing for natural flushing may be adopted. Members of the public may notice a scaling down of general cleaning at the affected beaches, as more specialised teams are deployed to clean these difficult areas. General cleaning of the beaches may still be required, as oil remnants may continue to be washed ashore. The washing of berths at Pasir Panjang Container Terminal is about 20% completed with the estimated completion date by end July 2024.
