Obesity is a complex trait in the truest sense. The heterogeneity behind this trait at an individual level and the breadth of associations with it encourage an abandoning of simplified searches for mechanisms of obesity. In place of this, we would encourage a more fluid consideration of mechanisms associated with obesity if we are to make best use of the tools available now and in the future.

Individuals with obesity (assessed by BMI) experience increased burdens in everyday life. For World Obesity Day, we wanted to fight the stigma that Obesity is more than a diagnosis or a medical condition and highlight what people don't see. Individuals with obesity experience burdens in everyday life activities, having a profound impact in their quality of life. Using our real-world database of thousands of individuals, we highlight that individuals with people experience decreasing levels of perceived overall health . This trend is associated with increased limitations on everyday physical and social functioning. These limitations also subsequently affect everyday life activities, which we take for granted everyday. Classification of categories: Overweight : BMI between 25 to 29.99 kg/m2 Class I obesity : BMI between 30 to 34.99 kg/m2 Class II obesity : BMI between 35 to 39.99 kg/m2 Class III obesity : BMI between 40 kg/m2 and greater

This week is Obesity Care Week and I'm sharing the 5 principles of obesity. The Obesity Action Coalition has excellent resources that provide more information on each of these principles. The truth is, I still see and hear a lot of misconceptions about obesity being simplified down to a "lifestyle choice" or possibly worse, a "non-issue". While there can be metabolically healthy people living in larger bodies, or while lifestyle certainly impacts this condition, it's not that simple to define the condition by one factor or provide only one solution. This is a multifactorial and chronic condition that requires the appropriate multidisciplinary and adequate treatment that people living with obesity deserve. We can do better. 1. Obesity is a chronic disease. 2. Obesity is driven by powerful underlying biology, not choice. 3. The many health effects of excess weight can start early. 4. Obesity is treatable. 5. Weight bias, stigma and discrimination are harmful.
