Exploring #macvlan in #Docker 🐳 for Network #Isolation and Performance 🚀 Recently, I dove into using macvlan networks in Docker to solve some advanced networking requirements. 🎯 The challenge was to isolate containers at the network layer while maintaining high performance and direct network access. Standard bridge networks weren't cutting it, especially when the need for each container to appear as a unique physical device on the network came up. 🔍 Why macvlan? Direct Network Access: macvlan allows #containers to be treated as individual devices on the network. Each container gets its own #MAC address and can communicate directly with the outside network, bypassing the host. Isolation: Provides a higher level of isolation compared to bridge networks, which is crucial for certain use cases. Performance: Enhanced network #performance by reducing the overhead associated with NAT and port mapping. 💡 Key Takeaways: Configuration: Setting up macvlan can be tricky, especially with regard to the parent interface and sub-interface setup. It's crucial to configure the parent network interface correctly. Use Cases: Perfect for scenarios where containers need to have their own IP addresses and communicate on the network like a physical device (e.g., legacy applications, network testing environments). Gotchas: Beware of potential conflicts with the host network and remember that containers on the same macvlan network cannot communicate directly with the host. Overall, macvlan proved to be an excellent solution for our specific needs, providing both the isolation and performance boost we were looking for. The Open RAN (#ORAN) architecture has opened previously closed #RAN systems by establishing standardized interfaces and protocols. In this framework, different vendors are expected to develop #xApps, which will be installed by third parties. 🌐 Packet Switching, ARPANET, and the TCP/IP Protocol: Building Blocks of the Modern Internet 🌐 While studying the fundamentals of Internet development, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of packet switching, an essential innovation introduced by ARPANET in the late 1960s. Packet switching breaks data into small packets, which are transmitted independently across a network and reassembled at the destination. This efficient, scalable method of communication was key to overcoming the limitations of circuit-switching networks. However, the real game-changer came with the development of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) manages packet fragmentation, ensuring data integrity and reliable transmission by checking that packets arrive in the correct order. Meanwhile, the Internet Protocol (IP) handles addressing and routing, allowing packets to traverse various networks and find their way to the intended destination, even in the face of network failures. This combination of packet switching and TCP/IP made it possible to create the resilient, fault-tolerant, and decentralized Internet we use today. The PROTEUS-6G Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) Phase-2 project has today and tomorrow its 2nd Physical Plenary Meeting at the nice facilities of Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) in Castelldefels. 💣 The project is progressing nicely towards the development of #hardware technologies (i.e. #transceivers, #multiplexing and #switching subsystems) that achieve high-capacities and low-latencies, as well as #software technologies associated with the orchestration of #6G #fronthaul network resources.

D2X envisions a Future Wireless Network Architecture (Non-3GPP) Multicast Broadcast Harmonized with 5G NR (MBS). When Sofware plays important role to Define the Network, Disaggregated RAN, UE and APPs using Cloud-Native Principles for future Interworking. D2X OFDMA improves spectrum efficiency using larger Bandwidths such as 24 MHz shown. This technology can be used in the Broadcast and IMT bands. It's Friday and time for a weekly update. I'll share some thoughts and what I've been working on lately. I often see posts where someone asks "what's the best way of troubleshooting X", where X is a protocol or feature. Let's take #BGP as an example. To troubleshoot BGP, you first need to know how BGP works. What transport does it use? What is the best path algorithm? What's an AS? How does it do loop prevention? How does it use communities? If you are oblivious to how BGP works, how can you troubleshoot it? Yes, there are people that are better or worse at troubleshooting, but the only way of becoming good at troubleshooting something is by: - Learning the protocol/feature at depth. - Getting experience with the protocol/feature. There are no shortcuts here. Once you have the understanding, you should understand how to troubleshoot it and apply a methodology for doing so in a structured manner. Hopefully you have followed along my blog posts on #Ethernet It has been really interesting to dive into the PHY world a bit. There is at least one or maybe to more posts coming. I'm doing the research for them currently. I also have some other posts planned on how to use #ping for troubleshooting. There are some variations very few people know about. I will teach you how to use these. There's also some posts coming on #vPC, one is around how I had to troubleshoot in my lab. I think you fill find it interesting! I've also been working on a few network design, #SDWAN, all the usual good stuff! I hope I can share some learnings in the future. What have you been working on? How was your week?
