Presented by: Alex Shegay (UoA Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), Ken Elwood (MBIE Science and Innovation, Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, The University of Auckland). 🚧 This presentation discussed the preliminary findings from a building damage reconnaissance mission conducted following the Hualien Earthquake in Taiwan. This mission, a collaborative effort involving researchers from Aotearoa New Zealand, Japan, and Taiwan, focused on evaluating the effectiveness of retrofitted buildings and the associated retrofit policies. Kiwi engineer Alex Shegay has witnessed the impressive performance of Japanese buildings in earthquakes, and he wants Aotearoa to benefit from similar technology. Alex Shegay, (Engineering at the University of Auckland) spent four years in Japan after completing his PhD in structural engineering. Japanese earthquake experiences and engineering insights have incentivised him to improve and extend the use of seismic protection systems for New Zealand buildings. One of the most powerful motivators for change came from seeing first-hand the performance of Japanese cities after earthquakes, 🗨️ “If that earthquake had happened in Wellington or Auckland it would have been a catastrophic event. But not in Sendai. Loss of life during earthquakes typically occurs in older structures that do not adhere to modern seismic guidelines. Addressing this issue poses a significant challenge for our societies and civil engineers. It is our responsibility to tackle this problem proactively by identifying and mitigating the threat before an earthquake occurs. In this context, I am delighted to present our recently published research in the Journal of Research on Engineering Structures and Materials.
