I agree wholeheartedly with your perspective, #AlanWildes. #Fear and #obligation have been twin sisters in motivating #generosity in the context of #churchfundraising within which I do most of my consultation. Fortunately, with the slow realization among #churchleaders that using hell as a means of scaring people into acceptable religious behavior patterns or using "obligations" - as if God is going to punish you if you ever miss a weekly worship service - to motivate people to fill a pew or to give generously have proven to be bankrupt motivators. Oh, you can use these methods to seek to control the right actions, and many #churches, #churchleaders, #pastors, and #christiandenominations do. However, the outcomes never produce enduring results or meaningful lifestyle changes. I share Carey N.'s perspective. There are many ways people are engaged.
