I'm pleased to have my new business cards now, and I've added additional thickness to the cards and rounded the corners to make them extra tasteful. These promo portfolio materials have been made for the Develop:Brighton event this week, and for those not connected to the games industry, Develop:Brighton is the largest gaming conference in the United Kingdom. I'll be catching the train tomorrow to Brighton from Bristol Temple Meads. I'm really looking forward to meeting more people affiliated with the games industry, to get a better idea of what the current vibe of gaming is, and to hopefully attend a shed load of rad talks to learn new information. In true Quadrophenia fashion, listening to Booker T. & The MG's, The Kingsmen, and The Who, I'm happy to say I'll be travelling to Brighton on the South Coast this July, to attend the Develop: Brighton 2024 Conference. For those not familiar with what Develop: Brighton is, it's the largest gaming industry conference in the UK, with the purpose of companies showcasing their latest work and networking. I went last year for the first time and really enjoyed the event, so I thought I'd go again this year. Seeing as I'm moving into the games industry, I am thinking of turning attending Develop: Brighton into a yearly tradition. What I'm looking forward to the most are the talks on a variety of game related subjects, to gain further understanding and insights into the industry. 🎮 Celebrating Creativity: "It Takes Two" by EA 🎮 I can't help but be in absolute awe of "It Takes Two" by Electronic Arts (EA) and Hazelight Studios, directed by the incredible Josef Fares, who, as a fellow Lebanese, is an absolute idol to me. The game mechanics in "It Takes Two" are super creative. From navigating a topsy-turvy world as miniature characters to turning everyday objects into tools, every moment is an "Aha!" moment. The level design is an inspiration for game designers, showcasing how innovation can spark endless player engagement. 🚀 The game's creativity knows no bounds, and it's a playground of fresh ideas. When building isometric or fixed-perspective games, we employ a neat technique during the concept phase to emulate (and roleplay) the player's viewpoint. This involves overlaying a dark gradient layer with a central rectangular cutout over the concept art to represent the player's screen. We position the character in the middle of this frame and move the layer around the environment, simulating the player's movement. It's been a wildly effective design technique for early-stage brainstorming among the team.
