What is Design for America and why is it so important? Read on and learn more.
The Graphic Design program in the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University has a new partnership with Design For America (DFA). DFA is a national organization that started at several prestigious universities across America, including Ivy League institutions. According to Associate Professor of Design Herb Vincent Peterson, the DFA has started with spring semester classes. He notes that Anderson University is the first and only higher education institution in South Carolina to be selected to partner with DFA, and that Anderson University is the only Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institution with such a partnership in place. “I’ve been aware of Design for America for quite some time and have known about how effective they are in bringing design learning to cross-disciplinary practices and students who are learning in various fields and in the community at the same time,” Peterson said. “When I took the position here at AU, one of the first thoughts I had was “we’re just set up to be a perfect space for a potential DFA studio.” Peterson pointed out that having a presence downtown in the Chiquola Building is an ideal place for a DFA program and that students and faculty are enthusiastic about the possibilities. I'd like to share Voting Made Visible—for all. "All" includes every American, both by birth and naturalized. This was a quarter-long project for my Senior Capstone class. We were given the problem: how to visually communicate the voting process for naturalized citizens whose primary language is not English, without using words or numbers. It was quite the challenge, but here is what we came up with... Huge shout-out to E3, the LWV Spokane, EWU Design Faculty, and everyone who was a part of the evolution of Voting Made Visible. #Vote2024 #VotingProcess #EWU #EWUDesign #AnimationDesign #MotionDesign

What next for the education in art and design pipeline? We predicted in 2016, when we first surveyed our subject, that the pipeline into the creative industries would be broken. We predicted it would break by 2020. We were wrong. Under funded and under valued since 2010, a cohort of children and young people had passed through primary and secondary education with less access to arts education. By 2020 the cracks in the pipeline were already in clear view for all to see. In many secondary schools, the arts were taught on carousels - taught only for one term at a tim; in year 6 they were taught only after SATs, and then there was the EBacc! A year ago today, 27 June 2023, when Art Now, our APPG for Art, Craft and Design subject survey was published, the damage had grown even deeper: 67 per cent of art and design teachers (across all phases and nations) reported that they were considering leaving the profession; 21% reported they had never attended any subject-specific CPD. What’s more, the DfE can no longer recruit sufficient numbers of art and design trainees. It is time for all arts teachers, arts subjects and teacher trainees to be valued – for the art design education pipeline into the creative industries, to be repaired and prioritised once again. Read our latest 2023 APPG subject survey here: https://lnkd.in/eJ7Nyixj Thank you to the team of academics, gallery educators, advisors and APPG chair and vice chair that made possible, and supported, these essential surveys and reports.

Loved reading Rebecca Ackermann's report on the updated curriculum at Stanford's d.school — in particular, the question "should we build it?" It made me wonder — how are ethics taught to the other disciplines involved in building a product? I feel anxious at the idea that designers are meant to serve as a moral compass on a team — it doesn't seem fair (or realistic) and it has that old familiar whiff of exceptionalism that tends to get us in trouble. Designers are rarely the final decision-makers in terms of business strategy, so I'm curious: how are we teaching our MBA or engineering students to consider these same questions? Maybe it is already baked in? Would truly love to know how much your education taught you about how to make ethical business decisions and how to think about trading off popularity, prestige or profit when it's clear that the product may cause damage to its users or the world around us.
Today, Fast Company published an exclusive story on our new Design program. The piece details how the d.school’s approach to teaching design is evolving to meet the needs of students and the complex challenges that await them after graduation. According to writer Rebecca Ackermann, “The courses in Stanford University’s updated design undergraduate and graduate programs bring a designer’s role as moral agent to the fore of design education, and encourage students to plan for the complex constellation of benefits and consequences that any intervention sets off for generations to come.” Read the full story now: https://lnkd.in/gEHFk3cG Original link from Fast Company: https://lnkd.in/gNP_USSp #codesign
