What would happen if YOU did a ‘thing’ and dropped an application into the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) WISE Awards and Honors platform?? 10 years ago today I finally had all the information .. and the courage! … to send my application off to (the then) ASSE for membership. Putting my skills, knowledge, achievements, and contributions on ‘paper’ was hard for me: Was I really all this? Did I truly know that? I felt boastful when all I was doing was letting the world see me for who I was and what I had done. Applying for WISE Awards and Honors recognition is just the same … All you are doing is telling someone who you are and what you are doing. But it feels scary, and it seems so big, right? Well, it’s not … it’s 3 or 4 questions. And its about a topic you are super familiar with: You! That’s it!! I was only a few years in the US (from Australia) and I did this ‘thing’ …. and my world has opened up like I could not imagine!! Oh, it was so worth it, and not so big and scary after all. Perhaps a WISE Awards and Honors recognition nomination will be worth it for you, in ways more than just winning! Your journey in establishing yourself in a new role unfolds in three phases: 1️⃣ At the Beginning: "You'll need some time to settle in." ↳ Patience is key at this stage. 💯 2️⃣ As You Progress: "You're building strong relationships in your new team!" 3️⃣ When You've Fully Established Yourself: "I saw how you supported the team through that project." ↳ And then: "Could you help me with something similar?" If you're at phase 1, take a deep breath. This is exactly where you need to be. Keep learning, keep growing, and remember that every step counts. Keep going. 💪 P.S. When we’ve been in the same job, the same role, the same career for some time. We can lose connection to the sense of what makes that special we once had. We call it things like “taking things for granted”, “not being appreciated”. And like an unattended bike that gets rusty. Without maintenance the value and appreciation erodes through time. What’s often overlooked is our ability experience that value again, through re-connecting to the pleasure, the enjoyment, the satisfaction we once had. To achieve this it’s important to connect our valuing to real experience. So take a moment to bring to mind your experience of working. And through pleasure, connect these different ways of activating the value you can experience again. The pleasure of doing - doing the work, doing the role, working together with others. The pleasure of having - having this opportunity, having this career, having a place to work. The pleasure of being - being in this role, being in a team, being part of this organisation. The pleasure of getting - getting results, getting better in the job, getting towards your career goals. When we take the time there is a huge potential to add meaning and value to our lives.
