For the third and final post in our series, examining e-commerce shipment volumes, we’ll take a deep dive into how consumer spending is impacting airfreight. Here are the facts: 💸 Increase in Spending - There has been a consistent increase in consumer spending. Consumer behavior has changed and spending continues to reach record levels, but what are we buying? 📦 Goods vs. Services - One-third of spending is on goods and the other two-thirds is on services. (Services include things like housing, utilities, healthcare, transportation, sporting events, etc.) 📉 Decrease in Volume - As consumers spend less on goods this translates to a decrease in shipment volume. Cargo volumes peaked in August 2022 and have weakened consistently since with no indication of this trend changing. Although consumer spending continues to increase, it is primarily on services rather than goods and products. As a result, the volume of shipments of goods by air and sea have decreased.
