For the third and final post in our series, examining e-commerce shipment volumes, we’ll take a deep dive into how consumer spending is impacting airfreight. Here are the facts: 💸 Increase in Spending - There has been a consistent increase in consumer spending. Consumer behavior has changed and spending continues to reach record levels, but what are we buying? 📦 Goods vs. Services - One-third of spending is on goods and the other two-thirds is on services. (Services include things like housing, utilities, healthcare, transportation, sporting events, etc.) 📉 Decrease in Volume - As consumers spend less on goods this translates to a decrease in shipment volume. Cargo volumes peaked in August 2022 and have weakened consistently since with no indication of this trend changing. Although consumer spending continues to increase, it is primarily on services rather than goods and products. As a result, the volume of shipments of goods by air and sea have decreased. For the second post in our e-commerce series, we’ll consider how OCEAN cargo is impacting AIR cargo. Is the current state of ocean cargo affecting shipping rates and airfreight volumes and if so, how? Potential Drivers: 📈Peak Volume - We’re seeing a spike as peak season holiday inventory shipping begins. It typically starts in July and continues through August. This is impacting all segments of the delivery industry. 📦 Capacity - It is hard to find available space on ships due to volume spikes as well as congestion and delays at ports. Driving more shippers to use air cargo instead. 💸 Cost - Current ocean cargo rates edge near pandemic level and have nearly doubled since January due to increased transit times, demand, and higher costs for the shipper. E-commerce volumes continue to soar as consumer buying habits have changed. Now, more than ever, consumers expect goods delivered directly to their doors after shopping online. 🤔❓ Is consumer behavior the only cause for rising e-commerce shipment volumes, or are there other factors at play? Let’s take a closer look at the potential drivers impacting airfreight volumes. First up, De Minimis. Threshold - Some speculate that the increase in volume is due to a threshold increase from $200 to $800. Procedures - It's assumed that businesses are shipping goods more frequently because they know low-value shipments can benefit from simplified customs clearance with the De Minimis threshold. Cost - Less duties and taxes are likely encouraging the rise in the volume of smaller parcel shipments.
