As you might know, sometimes I create scents for art exhibitions. So, when I attend immersive exhibitions that incorporate scent, I’m particularly interested in observing visitor behavior. Here’s what I’ve noticed: 1. People dislike complex actions and instructions: if something requires effort they weren’t prepared for, they’re likely to skip to the next, simpler exhibit. 2. If you want people to smell something, it needs to be as convenient and accessible as possible. 3. People enjoy smelling walls. It’s simple, convenient, and reminiscent of “scratch and sniff” magazine inserts. 4. Large exhibitions can be tiring, and visitors tend to move more quickly through the displays as time goes on. The same goes for descriptive texts: the first few are read carefully, but attention wanes with each subsequent text. Therefore, if an artist needs to convey something important, it’s best to place it at the beginning. 5. It seems that most visitors still aren’t used to immersive projects, retaining the habit of “don’t touch anything” in museums. So, if you want visitors to touch, smell, or shout something, there should be a prominent sign inviting or permitting them to do so. #scents #exhibitions #immersiveexperience

Looking at people looking at art: inside the mind of a gallery attendant. This article by Wallpaper* shares wonderful personal stories and some of their key observations that might sound familiar to frequent museum visitors: - Most people only spend (about eight) seconds looking at a piece of art, while others dive deep, spending hours soaking in every detail. - Because of social media, there's a boom in interest for immersive and interactive art exhibitions, with many (younger) visitors snapping photos rather than fully engaging with the art itself. - Reactions to art are all over the map—from laughter and tears to, occasionally, some naughty behavior like touching or even purposefully damaging (climate activists) the artwork. But more interestingly: - Over time, seeing the same artworks again and again can shift the attendants' own understanding and appreciation of these pieces. - Lately, visitors are also pondering big-picture questions about the purpose and inclusivity of museums, making the experience not just about looking at art, but about rethinking its place in our world.
