Chair of The Board of Directors at CNIB and Director of Legal Services at the Calgary Police Service
Held every September, Guide Dog Access Awareness Month is a time to educate people on proper guide dog etiquette, the rights of guide dog handlers and the legislation that protects them. It is also a time to champion equal access for guide dog handlers. Sadly, many people still don't know how to behave around a guide dog. Every time I step outside, I not only have to worry about people trying to distract my guide dog, but I also have to mentally prepare myself for the possibility of being denied access to stores, restaurants, rideshares –and other services. Refusing access to a person accompanied by a guide dog is not only degrading and disrespectful, but it also violates our fundamental human rights. Whether it’s dining at a restaurant, shopping at a store, taking a taxi or rideshare, going to school, staying at a hotel, or visiting a movie theatre – guide dogs belong everywhere. It’s the law. These laws have existed now for more than 40 years in most parts of Canada. It is not an excuse to be unaware of these laws or not to comply with them. Despite the legislation, guide dog handlers like me continue to encounter discrimination when we're challenged, questioned, or turned away from these public places. That's why Guide Dog Access Awareness Month is so important. By educating yourself and others about proper guide dog etiquette and the rights of guide dog handlers, you can help make your community more welcoming to guide dog teams. For more information, including educational resources, visit guidedogchampions.ca. [Image description: The top of the guide dog's head against a yellow background. It’s the law.” The CNIB logo appears above the dog's head.] Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada CNIB Deafblind Community Services
