Big news for international students in Germany🚨 Here are the updates ⤵️ More work rights were introduced under the latest Skilled Immigration Act amendments. From increased part-time work opportunities to easier routes for vocational study and work, Germany is opening doors wider for talent from around the world! 🚪💼 ✅Increased part-time work rights for international students from non-EU countries: from 120 full days or 240 half-days per year to 140 full days or 280 half-days. ✅Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week while studying without permission. ✅Expanded opportunities for vocational training or apprenticeships, including increased age limit and lowered language requirement. The Australian government has reduced the required two years of full-time relevant work experience before they can be sponsored by an employer for a skilled role to just one year, effective from November 23, 2024. If your skills are in demand in Australia, you can secure a full-time job in your field of study after graduation while you are on the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) and convince your employer to sponsor you under the Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa, soon to be renamed as the Skills in Demand Visa. After working for your sponsoring employer for two years, there may be a pathway to Permanent Residency. Happy days ahead! Kudos to the Australian government for making this wise policy change that is good for international students, good for employers, and great for Australia's skill-building! What are you waiting for? Small actions can make a big difference to someone’s life. This is a core belief I developed when I worked in education. In 1998, I co-wrote a curriculum to help the long-term unemployed break back into the workforce. As someone who had felt a lot of agency in my own life, I was surprised to learn there were people who had skills to offer but were out of work. There were various reasons for their unemployment. These included a lack of confidence, language barriers, or a lack of measurable skills. Sometimes they were stuck in a dysfunctional lifestyle. Some people needed counselling. Others needed a basic education in how to behave at work, like arriving on time or being polite. Our program organised traineeships with businesses like Qantas Catering, Coles and Spotlight and helped them take that first step. That was my first exposure to working for a purpose and it left a mark on me. I saw firsthand how a small action could break a cycle. This belief is my saving grace. If I start to feel overwhelmed by the challenges we need to tackle to keep our planet safe, I remind myself people can break a long term cycle. This belief keeps me moving forward, looking for solutions. It starts with some support to take the first small step. 

Great news for graduates working in their field and looking to migrate to Australia! The Grattan Institute, a powerful think tank advising the Australian government on migration policies, has proposed an update to the migration points system. Their suggestion benefits highly skilled migrants and the Australian economy. However, it is somewhat elitist and unfair to tradespeople. I think, the institute believes Australia should train its own tradespeople through apprenticeships while bringing in highly skilled professionals from overseas, which is not a bad idea actually. I hope the Australian government adopts this proposal with adjustments to make it fair for vocational workers as well. Your invitation for an 189 Permanent Resident Visa will be guaranteed upon achieving 400 points. How can this be achieved? I'm using an ideal scenario example: You must have a suitable skills assessment for a skill level 1, 2, or 3 occupation at the time of invitation. You must be between the age of 21 to 29: 100 points You must have a minimum of 2 years of work experience, overseas or Australian, in a skill level 1 occupation: 50 points You must have a high-paying Australian job offer (minimum 1 year) earning more than $80,000 per year: 40 points You must have excellent English, IELTS 8.0+: 90 points You must have a Bachelor's degree or higher: 30 points You must be single: 90 points TOTAL: 400 POINTS. BINGO! YOUR PR IS ALMOST GUARANTEED! There is no need to waste your time and money on a Professional Year Program or moving to regional areas. In fact, you don’t even have to study in Australia—you can study anywhere in the world. Just get qualified with a degree from a reputed university, secure a job in your field of study, get promoted, secure a $80K p.a. job offer from an Australian employer, improve your English, and stay single 😊. All the best!

I was very disappointed to discover that Returnerships (apprenticeship type programmes for over 50's) are no longer going ahead. As this article explains, getting over 50's back into the workforce or upskilling them will significantly boost the economy and productivity. Over 50's have a wealth of knowledge, skills, wisdom and experience that can only be developed over time. Age diversity is an important component of any strong workforce. According to CIPHR statistics, the most common form of workplace discrimination reported in the UK is age discrimination. More than 1 in 20 said they had experienced workplace discrimination based on their age. We need to urgently find other solutions to support this cohort in their careers with our organisations. Innovating flexible experiential learning options that upskill and reskill while still drawing on the valuable life and work experience that over 50's bring needs to be high on our agendas.
