Throughout June, Akima sites took part in the National Safety Council (NSC)'s #NationalSafetyMonth. The training promoted safety awareness and practices among employees, along with spreading the message of how crucial our individual "why" is when it comes to workplace safety for all.
The overall participation across Akima amplified the impact and awareness we all bring to our world of safety, both individually and collectively. The value of pausing to remember the reason why we make the choice to work safely every day is of the utmost importance in our pursuit of safety.
We’re proud of our commitment to safety every day across Akima!

One of the best ways to improve workplace safety is to practice Risk Reduction. Per the NIOSH's hierarchy of controls, here are the top five ways that workplace risks can be reduced, from least to most effective:
• PPE – Protecting workers with Personal Protective Equipment
• Administrative Controls – Changing the way people work
• Engineering Controls – Isolating people from the hazard
• Substitution – Replacing the hazard
• Elimination – Physically removing the hazard

On this National Safety Week, let us remember why safety is of paramount importance in the industrial sector and workplaces. It's not just about the rules; It's about life.
To shift the mindset toward safety, we need comprehensive education, open communication, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
By adopting technology and promoting a culture of safety, we can work towards the goal of zero injuries. Let's use this week to reaffirm our dedication to creating a safe work environment. Together we can make a difference.

Safety should be viewed as a value like honesty, working hard and reporting to work on time. Values are embedded; while priorities can change. Making safety a depot value leads to building a workplace safety culture. So, safety is fundamental to operational excellence. Safety is a core value. This is the approach I take on this matter as an Ambassador of Safety. It's more about morality and best practices not just for legal requirements and compliance. Let us join hands in the building of a Culture of Safety.

Safety Day 2024 united All Staff!
Workplace safety took centre stage on 5 June as we united all BSGL staff for our annual Safety Day events. The day kicked off with an energizing session of pre-work exercises, followed by opening speeches from our top management, which underscored the paramount importance of safety to our operations.
This year, our safety focus was two-fold: "The Impact of Our Decisions" and "The Major Risks of Our Activities". Safe decision-making plays a critical role in injuries and fatalities prevention, as it can be seen as a process involving different steps during which various factors can influence our choices.
To further address our safety focus on major risks in our activities, training on protocols for responding to heart attack scenarios was conducted. This reinforced our belief that we all have a role to play in upholding the highest standards of health and safety and that every accident can be prevented.
In recognition of exemplary safety practices, we proudly presented the Safety Awards to our frontline staff. To cap off the day, site-wide safety walks were conducted and all participants received a pair of “Cool Sleeve” as souvenirs, allowing them to take home a tangible reminder of the collaborative spirit that permeated the event.
By aligning on these critical safety initiatives in our projects, we demonstrated our united focus on cultivating a safe work environment for everyone. Safety remains, and will always be, our top priority.
