Amid the ongoing #standoff with #China, the #DefenceMinistry is set to undertake major projects, including the construction of seven advanced #frigates for the #IndianNavy and the #IndianArmy's proposal to replace its #T72 #tanks with modern #FutureReadyCombatVehicles (#FRCVs).

Appreciated the opportunity to chat with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio's Sarah Maunder about yesterday's recent milestone for the Royal Australian Navy's Hunter class frigate. https://lnkd.in/gSx7b98J An important milestone and great to see - but we must learn lessons from the journey to getting here. The 2009 White Paper identified the need to replace the ANZAC class frigate. The decision to select the Hunter class frigate was made in 2018. In 2024 we are now at the point of commencing construction, with the first vessel not expected to be operational until 2034. 25 years from the need being identified to the first vessel operational. Whilst shipbuilding is about long terms plans, this timeframe, delays in decision-making and embryonic designs has resulted in the RAN having it's smallest and oldest surface combatant fleet since at least the early 1950s, arguably longer. With the removal of strategic warning time - Australia must respond and learn to do things differently. This culmination of issues has left Australia's maritime domain and maritime trade exposed during a period of historically heightened tensions.
