#SundayReads Gallup's annual "State of the Workplace" report for 2024 surveyed more than 183,000 business units across 53 industries and 90 countries. One conclusion is that employee engagement is directly correlated to a company's performance. Managers that consider employee health and wellbeing can increase engagement, which then leads to increased profitability. "Highly inspiring and engaging jobs are driven by what happens locally, driven by great managers," writes Gallup Chief Scientist Jim Harter. Here is a good article on the state of the global workplace. Some interesting stuff around the topic of engagement and management versus employee burn out, etc. State of the Global Workplace The annual Gallup State of the Global Workplace report highlights key trends in employee engagement and wellbeing. The findings come from survey data and follow-up interviews with workers from throughout the work. In 2023, global employee engagement stagnated and overall well-being declined, directly impacting organizational productivity. According to the report, 22% of employees experience daily loneliness, with fully remote workers having the highest amount of loneliness. Employee engagement, the report notes, is a significant factor in overall life experiences and is associated with hope for the future. In countries where job opportunities are high, workers tend to have less active disengagement since they do not feel as trapped in a bad work environment. Managers also seem to have a significant effect on employee engagement; when managers are engaged, employees are more likely to also be engaged, and this is true across countries. However, managers are more likely than non-managers to report negative daily experiences and to be looking for a new job. Key Findings: 23% of employees are engaged, 34% are thriving in wellbeing, 41% experience daily stress, and 52% are seeking new jobs. Low engagement costs the global economy an estimated $8.9 trillion annually. A greater number of engaged employees leads to improved organizational outcomes, including increased profit, higher retention rates, and better customer service. Read the full article on Gallup

Our most recent column looks at the pivotal role of volunteering in the workplace. Not only is this about meaning and purpose — but for many of us it’s about human connection and remembering we are stronger in collaboration. #purpose #emotionalintelligence #meaning #csr

Given the state of the world and the persistence of workplace burnout, employee engagement may come down to one critical factor—whether or not an employee feels well. My new book, Optimal, reviews a study from the Harvard Business School in which hundreds of working men and women kept journals of how they felt at work and considered the ingredients of a “good day.” Among these ingredients: feeling a sense of meaning. In last week's column on purpose, Elizabeth Solomon and I explore one of the critical factors in helping employees feel like their work has meaning. #purposedrivenleadership #purposeeconomy #meaningfulwork #emotionalintelligence #volunteering https://lnkd.in/gtM5AVHg

The purpose of a job is opportunity, involvement, enablement, support, guidance, growth, and connection—the things that allow you to see that meaning is always present and your purpose is already fulfilled. The question becomes, how do we give people enough time, energy, and stability to involve themselves with these dynamics? We have to ask ourselves and our employers, "How does this work heal us, make us more resilient, and enable our growth? Am I being taken care of, or suffering more greatly? Am I valued; not just monetarily but as a human being?" #worklife #balance #wellness #selfcare #support #enablement #engagement #humancentricism
