Do you all know what "civic health" is? RWJF's 2024 County Health Rankings is zeroing in on this: "Evidence shows that participating in our communities, whether through volunteering or joining neighborhood groups, strengthens our social connections and sense of belonging which in turn, benefits our physical and mental health" and highlighting the importance of public spaces that facilitate civic engagement and social cohesion. Yet another way that we can plan and design for community health! https://lnkd.in/gtvp7zDB

“I believe many people care and would like to help make change, yet we are still using limited tools from the toolbox when we don’t have to. We recognize that this work is difficult and that the City and organizations aren’t opposed to these principles, but rather they aren’t built to commit to and do this work,” Dr. Bill McKinney writes in a guest commentary for the Philadelphia Citizen. “While Kensington continues to face significant short- and long-term challenges, we also stand at a moment of opportunity to mobilize a robust, resource rich and engaged civic network to bring about sustained outcomes and solutions, if only those in the private and public sector would commit to aligning their strategies with the Kensington communities self-determined priorities and preliminary strategies.” In a new report, Co-Creating Kensington: Alignment, we give recommendations and examples for how government and private entities can adopt trauma-informed, participatory, and comprehensive models of change to bring about sustained outcomes and solutions in Kensington and ensure that residents are You can read Dr. Bill McKinney’s full guest commentary "A Guide for Co-Creating Kensington's Future" for the Philadelphia Citizen here (linked in bio): https://lnkd.in/egVmJ99n and the full report at https://lnkd.in/eyura-J6. #communitydriven #participatory #traumainformed #communitydevelopment

Support Officer for the Architectural Heritage Fund, founder member and chair of Stretford Public Hall, acupuncturist and director of The Wellbeing Rooms
Absolutely brilliant news for those of us involved in all things community. As part of the Kings Speech it has been announced that The Community Right to Buy bids I have been involved in campaigning for as part of the We're Right Here campaign for is to be included in the new English Devolution Bill announced today. Lots of work to do to make that Bill as good as we want it needs to be. But definitely a big moment for all the areas I work in. This obviously impacts on my work at The Architectural Heritage Fund helping to protect and save heritage buildings for the good of the local community such as all of the great stuff happening at Stretford Public Hall and 100s of other fantastic organisations. It will support the work we are doing what the Heritage development trusts who are taking on the portfolio of buildings in their local areas to bring around significant community led regeneration and similarly the fantastic work being carried out through Platform Places. It will impact the co-ops and community groups, such as those I have been involved with through Coops UK and Stir to Action. Supporting organisations and communities to take on assets that help create spaces that help places thrive, often in the most deprived areas in the country. It will also impact on the work I have been doing around community health through my life as an acupuncturist. enabling more therapists to find space where they can provide affordable to find space where they can provide low cost therapy. The potential to support so many sectors heritage, arts, community, music, housing health and basically all the good things cannot be underestimated. There's obviously a long way to go lots of detail to get right but well done everyone on the campaign for helping get to this point. Working with both elected officials and community groups is a skill to master. Cities get community input in different — mostly just advisory — ways. Some examples of community input channeling in the United States include #Atlanta, Georgia’s 25 neighborhood planning units (serving the total of 240 neighborhoods) or #NYC’s system of 59 community boards (consisting of up to 50 unsalaried members). Best practices of local governing can often come out of substantive interaction of public officials with citizens.
How much say do lobbyists, biz leaders and residents w deepest pockets have in deciding which programs are most needed in Your city?

How can community assemblies transform decision-making? We shared a #BlogPost last week exploring how this innovative public engagement process allows community members to be involved in decisions and policies that affect them, resulting in better informed residents who come together to co-create solutions. The article expands on the following reasons community assemblies could be a part of organizational, governmental and municipal decision-making: 1. Recommendations put forward by assemblies reflect a fuller diversity of experiences 2. Community assemblies are deliberative and informative 3. Community assemblies bring people together and strengthen existing bonds 4. Community assemblies rebuild trust and make room for accountability from all parties Read the full post: https://lnkd.in/gT4ju8DA
