We are proud to see our client, Seafarers Hospital Society CEO Sandra Welch draw attention to the continued gaps in communication that leave many crew members unaware of existing industry resources for mental health, physical health, financial resilience and more in the latest issue of Seaways by The Nautical Institute. Sandra recounts the panel discussion between Warsash Maritime School’s Leanna Phillips and Georgia Kenny, as well as City of Glasgow College’s Ryan Campbell and Sean-Paul Gallagher - moderated by Ocean Technologies Group’s Catherine Logie - at SHS’ recent conference ‘Sustainability at Sea: Why Seafarers’ Health Matters’ where they confirmed that most, if not all, of the freely available welfare initiatives discussed were unfamiliar to them. The implications of a lack of support, particularly when faced with a challenging environment, are evident for our industry: ➡ As Merchant Navy Training Board Director Kathryn Neilson put it, seafarers vote with their feet. Without proper systems for crew safety and welfare, we are unlikely to ensure that we recruit and retain the skilled people we need for our industry to progress. ➡ Speaking of his first experience at sea, Steven Gosling MSc AFNI of The Nautical Institute recounted conditions that almost led him to quit the industry. Fortunately this was not the case - and he has gone on to have a wonderful career working in the cruise sector before transitioning to shore-side roles - but he pointed out that having access to crew-based welfare initiatives would have made a difference and perhaps have mitigated some of the impact of this early experience. So what does this mean for our industry? 📌 We need benchmarking mechanisms that keep track of our successes and challenges when it comes to crew welfare. 📌 These should account not only for compliance with regulations such as the STCW and crew turnover, but also leave room for proactive organisations to take additional measures and institute initiatives for crew health and welfare. 📌 In order to enable this process, the Seafarers Hospital Society has designed a maritime-specific Key Performance Indicator (KPIs) toolkit — launched at the Sustainability at Sea conference. The IMO International Day of the Seafarer is observed annually on June 25, and each year we pay recognition to the amazing work done by the seafarers. The 2010 Manila Diplomatic Conference, which aimed to implement the amended STCW Convention, established the Day of the Seafarer by a resolution. Its goal is to acknowledge the unique contribution that seafarers from over the globe make to global trade by sea, the global economy, and civic society. The day is set aside for the discussion of topics such as the rights, health and safety of seafarers. This year's campaign, "Seafarers' Contributions to making the Maritime Sector a Safer Workplace," will highlight the vital role that seafarers play in ensuring the safety of maritime operations and will draw attention to the crucial role that they play in fostering a safer working environment throughout the maritime industry. Beyond merely adhering to regulations, ensuring a safe workplace at sea necessitates cultivating a culture that prioritises mental health and safety. Seafarers have particular difficulties, and it is our shared duty to promote their welfare and create an atmosphere in which they can prosper. We therefore take this day to pay a tribute to all the value contributions to ensuring safety at sea made by every single seafarer around the world.

The new office means a new venue to host the most attended Industrial Working Group at European Pilots! The highlights of the meetings were 👏 listening to the presentation of Lien Valcke on her PhD thesis regarding atypical employment, job-related well-being in European cockpit and cabin crew, and the relationship with safety; 👏 diving into details of the Platform Workers Directive with DG EMPL. It is important to look beyond one's field and search for successful examples of legislation in other domains. Will the Platform Workers Directive be a success? Given that the criteria of genuine employment were not harmonised on the international level, I see more hurdles than benefits so far for the efficient protection of employees' rights. However, only implementation into the national legislation will show the results, and who knows, maybe the national criteria of genuine employment will cover all labour sectors and not only platform work 👀 Sarah Kamer James Phillips Tevfik Zehni Johannes Bade Emil Cimiotti Paul Allen Lars Frontini Patrick ARPINO

𝐓𝐋;𝐃𝐑: Exploring the seas requires a harmonious blend of mental, physical, and social well-being for our #maritime workforce. The 2023 SEAFiT Crew survey, spanning 1.6K ships and 19K #seafarers, sheds light on the critical elements shaping life onboard. Internet connectivity emerges as a lifeline, with over 70% reporting smooth camaraderie among crew members, relying heavily on high-quality internet access to connect with loved ones ashore (91% demand). Yet, the report underscores industry blind spots – wages and shore connectivity. Reactive measures prevail over proactive solutions. Conducted in Q1 & Q2 2023, the survey gathers insights from 18,352 seafarers on 1,574 ships. Predominantly Asian and European voices dominate, with the Philippines leading at 37.3%. 'Bulk Carriers' make up 31.7% of the participating fleet. For us, this survey reinforces the importance of holistic crew #wellbeing. It prompts reflection on existing practices and the need for industry-wide improvements. We emphasise collaboration for positive change, advocating for policies that prioritise seafarer welfare in all its dimensions. Let's work together to ensure a healthier and happier maritime community. Read the SeaFiT Crew Survey Report 2023 here: https://lnkd.in/gvDG9Ppa

🌊🚢 Help Us Celebrate the Day of the Seafarer 2024! 🚢🌊 Today, we join the global maritime community in celebrating the International Day of the Seafarer. This annual celebration, organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), recognizes the invaluable contributions that seafarers make to our everyday lives. Seafarers are the unsung heroes of the #maritime industry and #global trade. They ensure the smooth delivery of goods and fuels we rely on daily, keeping the economy moving and sustaining our way of life. Since the first Day of the Seafarer in 2010, following the introduction of revised international laws (MLC), there has been a global commitment to ensuring that all seafarers receive consistent training, welfare, and safety standards. This year’s theme is #SafetyTipsAtSea, emphasizing the importance of safety practices in the maritime industry. Let’s take a moment to appreciate and acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices of seafarers worldwide. Their efforts are fundamental to the prosperity of the global economy and the comfort of our everyday lives. Join us in honoring these brave individuals who navigate the high seas to keep our world connected. Thank you, Seafarers! #DayOfTheSeafarer #Seafarers #Maritime #GlobalTrade #ShippingIndustry #SafetyTipsAtSea #SouthernStarNavigation

Attention Seafarers: Your Voice Matters! We're committed to improving the safety, security, and overall well-being of seafarers—the heart of the maritime industry. We believe in a maritime industry that causes zero harm, and your well-being is key to achieving this vision. In our ongoing efforts, we've launched the 'Voice of the Crew' survey, a unique initiative to gather direct insights from you - the seafarers. We want to understand: 1. What matters most to you on the high seas? 2. What enhances your life aboard? 3. What contributes to your happiness? The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete and is open to all seafarers, regardless of rank, nationality, or vessel type. It's your opportunity to share your opinions and experiences, and to shape the future of the maritime industry. The responses are confidential and anonymous. Your participation will help us, and other organizations advocate for your rights and interests with key stakeholders, including ship owners, regulators, and NGOs. The results will also be used to improve the RightShip Code of Conduct and Crew Welfare Self-Assessment Questionnaire, promoting best practices and standards in the industry. Thank you for your time and participation. Together, we can make a difference for seafarers and the maritime industry. #VoiceOfTheCrew #SeafarerWellbeing #MaritimeIndustry Voice of Crew Survey https://lnkd.in/gUw-imud
