What is glifaa? #funfactfriday "For decades, a Department of State employee’s security clearance could be denied or revoked—effectively ending their careers—simply for their sexual orientation." Rules prohibiting discrimination and hostility towards non-heterosexual individuals were established in the mid-1970s. However, they did not apply to the Foreign Service. #glifaa stands for Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies and was created by USAID employees David Buss and David Larson in 1992. It was formed as an employee affinity group for LGBT+ employees, family members, and allies in US foreign affairs agencies. glifaa gained support from influential people like Madeleine Albright, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and more, and enabled numerous policy changes to support LGBT rights. With community and government support, glifaa was able to expand its programs throughout the years. Today, glifaa is a global network of nearly 1000 members and allies. As of today, there have been 20 #LGBT ambassadors in posts worldwide!

LETS REPEAL OUR ANTI-GAY LAWS: By BARRISTER ATOH WALTER M. TCHEMI ( LGBT RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS ) Book overview LGBT rights are human rights, is a compendium of two qualitative in-depth research papers that are completely interwoven in all ramifications pertaining to the subject matter. The papers/ studies have expressed grave concern about human rights violations and abuses sustained by LGBT people and others accused of participating in consensual same-sex activity in Cameroon, driven by the application of section 347 bis of the Cameroon Penal Code, as read with sections 165 and 336 amongst others of the Cameroon Criminal Procedure Code. LGBT rights are human rights, propounds that, the moral force of our criminal justice system is predicated upon the conviction that, criminal justice should not be diluted by a standard of proof that leaves people in doubt when innocent men are being condemned. That, the court, whose function is to dispense justice with impartiality both to the parties and to the community which it serves, should not permit its processes to be employed in a manner which gives rise to unfairness. J.D. Vance's Focus on Opposing DEI Initiatives and LGBTQ Rights in U.S. Foreign Policy as Senator Foretells Trump-Vance Administration Approach As Senator, Vance held up nominations of dozens of diplomats, sending pre-confirmation questions on how each would support the Administration's policies regarding DEI and LGBTQ rights (one such question below). John Hudson reports that Vance’s memo and intensive scrutiny of Biden’s ambassadorial nominees reflects his view that cultural elitism has infected America’s diplomatic corps and needs to be rooted out. This could foretell how personnel policies advocated in Project 2025 could be executed. Source: The Washington Post https://lnkd.in/dQzyCXDH

🏳️🌈 When Religious Freedom Meets LGBTQ Rights: A Creative Solution Story 🏛️ At Haller Kwan LLP, we've tackled cases that push the boundaries of employment laws that sometimes seem to conflict with one another. Here's what happened: A Christian college recruited an LGBTQ coach from out of state. They promised inclusivity, but rescinded the offer after they relocated. Religious exemptions threatened to block a discrimination claim So, how did we fight back? We got creative: 1️⃣ We leveraged a little-known MN statute (Minn. Stat. § 181.64) prohibiting fraudulent inducement of workers to relocate 2️⃣ We built a case around broken promises, not just discrimination 3️⃣ We prepared for litigation while pushing for mediation as a means to educate the college on its liability risk despite its religious liberties. The result? A substantial settlement for our client, including financial compensation and a fresh start. This case reminds us: when conventional paths are blocked, creative and innovative legal thinking can pave the way to justice. "Queer people have never been the focus of history, since their stories have often been omitted, denied or silenced. LGBTQ+ History Month aims to rectify this gap, and to build a more respectful and inclusive society for all people. I work as an LGBTQ+ workshop facilitator, and so I often spend time with queer asylum seekers. I know that the UK’s asylum system is incredibly hostile towards Muslim asylum seekers. Workshop facilitators will often suggest taking a photo together at the end of our activities, and of course many queer asylum seekers are uncomfortable with this, because they want to protect their anonymity and their identity, and do not want their families back home to know about their sexuality. However, I know that the workshop facilitators mean well, because many of them have been through the asylum system themselves, and know that photographic evidence is incredibly important in “proving” one’s sexual orientation. We have to talk about how onerous the burden of proof is for queer asylum seekers who have to navigate the hostile immigration system in this country". Read the reflections of a queer Chinese international student and member of our network, as part of our LGBTQ+ History Month x Who Is Welcome? campaign, here: https://buff.ly/42L3eMG #LGBTQHM #WhoIsWelcome

More progress for #LGBTQ+ rights in the #Caribbean! A case is also pending in St Lucia! 🏳️🌈 This gives me hope for my birth land Jamaica, one of the few counties, which also include: Guyana, Grenada, St. Vincent & the Grenadines — where same-sex relationship is still #criminalised. The court ruled that sections 14 and 16 of the Sexual Offences Act, which criminalised consensual same-sex activity between adults, were unconstitutional. Laws criminalising sexual activity between people of the same sex in English-speaking Caribbean nations were first imposed by the #British under their rule in the 1800s, according to a report by Outright. In recent years, a number of Anglophone Caribbean nations have repealed such laws, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago. A case is also pending in St Lucia! 👏🏽 🙏🏾 LGBTQ+ RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS! Read more: https://lnkd.in/g5b3Ua4A
