Executive Vice President, Strategy and Partnerships, Tony Blair Institute & 3 Independent Board positions
"Always be learning" someone once told me. This is a book of leadership lessons, with banging chapters like 'Scandal', and er...'The rule of law'. I had the pleasure of reading drafts and the final copy. I highly recommend this for 3 main groups. Buy this book: 1) if you work in any of the 43 governments TBI has as clients; 2) if you are interested or active in politics, international development or history; 3) if you're that person who has read tons of books on leadership but keeps buying more!
This September, in the U.S. we publish ON LEADERSHIP by Tony Blair (Tony Blair Institute for Global Change). This is the manual on political leadership that he would have wanted when he first took office. It draws on the practical lessons learned in government and since, through his Institute’s work with leaders in more than 40 countries around the world. With today’s highly polarized, politicized, and disenfranchised cultural environment, it is highly likely that we will continue to only see a series of one-term presidents in the future. That means ongoing instability and destabilization giving the American people whiplash. Companies and organizations with long-term leadership FAR outperform and are more stable than those with short term leaders. We need presidential leadership that can lead for 8 years. Winning isn’t the goal, leading is. And good leadership may or may both be what wins - that is dependent upon the character of the people. When the number 1 metric for a presidential candidate is name ID, the citizenry has already lost and leadership, wisdom, and competency are no longer requisites for President - popularity is.
