📢 At a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering event on Thursday, 26 September at Prince Philip House in London, The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre ( AMRC ) and The Boeing Company were announced as winners of the 2024 Bhattacharyya Award! 🏆 This accolade highlights the success of their long-standing collaboration in merging industrial expertise with academic excellence. The strategic alliance between the University of Sheffield and Boeing paved the way for the establishment of the AMRC, which was instrumental in justifying Boeing’s first European manufacturing site. This collaboration is also nurturing a pipeline of future talent in the advanced manufacturing sector. 🌟 Their impactful research includes projects aimed at developing 100% sustainable aviation fuels and constructing one of the largest collaborative R&D programs to tackle challenges in aerospace composites. 🚀 According to a new report from the Academy on Trends in Engineering Research, materials engineering, including the creation of novel composites, remains one of the UK's most productive research areas. 📈 Funded by the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Bhattacharyya Award recognizes UK universities and colleges that demonstrate sustained, strategic industrial partnerships benefiting society and deserving of national recognition. 🎓 The 2024 Bhattacharyya Award finalists have collectively generated thousands of highly skilled jobs across sectors such as manufacturing, aeronautics, robotics, aviation, space, energy, defence, and security, and have secured over £1bn in investments. 💼💷 #EngineeringExcellence #Innovation #AMRC #Boeing #BhattacharyyaAward #AdvancedManufacturing #SustainableAviation #ResearchAndDevelopment #UKEngineering 📽️ Watch: University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and The Boeing Company

I cannot stress enough on the current situation of Embry-Riddle Prescott College of Engineering. Please read, share, comment, and react. The situation is dire and the College of Engineering here at ERAU Prescott is on the brinks of being destroyed. The "board of truestees" at the main campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has completely bypassed the faculty handbook - effectively the faculties' contract - and improperly remade their own definition of "Tenure." To those who may not know, the Tenure status for a professor guarantees them their jobs until they retire. They are also guaranteed their academic freedom - meaning they are able to focus on whichever they find themselves most benefiting to the school. In the Prescott campus' case, the professors within the college of engineering have been focusing most of their effort on giving their students the best education they can possibly offer to prepare students for the real industry. The case of Tenure status being difficult to obtain was the same as any other schools, but not too many opposed that as it was at least somewhat fair for Tenure to be difficult to obtain. You could say that Tenure is a dream achievement for many professors who become professors. Recently, the "board of truestees" have passed a policy that effectively removes the Tenure status. No communication with the faculties beforehand, no votes, and no warnings. Details of how the "board of directors" completely ignored the official voting policy can be found on the Horizons linked down below (Student run press at the Prescott Campus). To give you a brief summary of this new "policy," it would force Tenure professors to be "reviewed" every 5 years on the money they bring in for "research." Perhaps tripling the cut for faculties' salaries compared to their own wasn't enough to keep their pockets heavy. This merely shows how ignorant the board of truestees is of the current focus and state of the Prescott campus, as well as the fact that the new Chancellor does not care too much about the well-being of our college. I guess Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is a business, after all. There are many professors who truly wished Embry-Riddle Prescott College of Engineering to be their final stop; many felt proud enough with this school to dedicate their last section of their careers into producing the best engineers that their skills and expertise could produce. As of now it seems to be clear that nearly 20% are confirmed to leave if the conflicts are not solved with the rest already seeking new jobs with a better future. I love this school and I don't think there are any schools that are as industry-prioritized in the world. The ignorant business board must think otherwise. The situation is dire and it is truly unfortunate to see the professors whose only goal and priority has been to prepare students for the industry as best as they can lifelessly preparing to depart.

Allow me to be vulnerable for a moment... On February 7th, 2024, I successfully completed my PhD Viva, with some corrections. While this accomplishment should have brought great joy, I found myself grappling with feelings of inadequacy. Despite understanding that corrections are a normal part of the PhD process, I couldn't shake the sense of failure that overshadowed my achievement. This struggle has weighed heavily on me over the past few months. Upon reflection, I've come to realize that I've been overly harsh on myself, setting high expectations for success that have somewhat blinded me. Undertaking a PhD amidst the challenges of the COVID era presented numerous hurdles, from logistical and geographical obstacles to unresponsiveness and financial constraints. As a matter of fact, embarking on a PhD journey itself is undeniably daunting. However, today, I proudly stand tall, uplifted by the unwavering support of my support system. This journey has taught me a vital lesson: to extend kindness and compassion to myself. Rather than viewing this as a setback, see it as an opportunity to refine my work and make a meaningful impact in the aviation industry. I extend heartfelt gratitude to the examiners and chair (Dr Brahim Herbane BA (Hons), PhD, AHEA, SIRM, CMBE, Robert Mayer, Prof Kassa Woldesenbet Beta) for their thoughtful review of my thesis and invaluable suggestions for improvement. To my supervisors (Stephen Ison, Lucy Budd) you have been my guiding lights, offering hope and inspiration when I needed it most. Words alone cannot express my appreciation for your unwavering support. As I dot the final i’s and cross the final t’s on my corrections, I look forward to my journey within the realm of Sustainable Aviation. #PhD #SustainableAviation #aviation #PhDViva
