We were proud to welcome Prof Robert Mokaya OBE, deputy vice-chancellor at The University of Sheffield to the AMRC today. He was shown some of our brilliant innovation and world-leading research in clean energy and nuclear, castings and digital manufacturing by Geraint Jewell, head of the Advanced Manufacturing Group, Matt Farnsworth, commercial director for the AMRC, and Dave Stoddart, who heads up the AMRC’s nuclear manufacturing group. Robert, who leads on the diversity and inclusion OneUniversity pillar, also paid a visit to our first Women in Manufacturing Network which is set up to offer an organisational wide platform to promote gender equality across all areas of the AMRC.

We have a new chief technology officer for the AMRC. Andrew Silcox, who many will already know for his brilliant leadership at AMRC Cymru, started in the interim role this week. He says he has ‘big shoes to fill’ but he’s raring to go to ensure the AMRC remains the go-to place for industrial research and innovation. He said: “The formidable reputation my predecessors have built for the AMRC over the last 20 years, as the number one institution for manufacturing research quality and integrity, means that it will certainly be a challenge for me to step into those shoes, but it is a challenge I am up for.” Andy’s appointment follows that of predecessor Professor Ben Morgan to interim CEO in January, who previously held the position of research director and chief technology officer for the AMRC. Andy, who has been with the AMRC since 2019, was previously research director at AMRC Cymru, where he was responsible for the overall strategy of the centre and the technical delivery of its diverse project portfolio. The University of Sheffield AMRC is proud to step forward in solidarity to celebrate International Women's Day and do our bit to help #AccelerateAction. That’s why we’re launching the Women in Manufacturing Network for our staff next week to provide them with a platform where they can come together and promote gender equality across all areas of the AMRC. Why? Because we know manufacturing is a male-dominated industry - women made up just 26% of the UK manufacturing workforce in 2024, according to figures from the ONS. We really hope more internal networks like this will start to help bridge this divide and bring together those working in manufacturing to grow, inspire, empower, and drive change.

High praise for South Yorkshire's Advanced Manufacturing Park as "one of the most successful" examples of public, private, university-backed innovation in manufacturing, in the country. This was in response to local business leader Mike Maddock of Performance Engineered Solutions (PES) Ltd question to Rt Hon Rachel Reeves about AI adoption in manufacturing and SMEs at Make UK conference this week. We are thrilled to see our region recognized for its leadership in manufacturing innovation. Watch the full interview here👉https://lnkd.in/eUsDBs7y #SouthYorkshire #AdvancedManufacturing #MakeUK

We're gearing up to welcome the world's largest resin transfer moulding (RTM) press system from Langzauner Ges.m.b.H. 🦾 This groundbreaking technology will be at the heart of AMRC's new innovation facility and drive our largest R&D project, Composites at Speed and Scale (COMPASS). Setting an ambitious benchmark for the equipment, Darren Wells, AMRC senior technical fellow, said: “Langzauner’s solution not only meets all of our targets, but exceeds many, placing this press at the forefront of high-rate #composite manufacturing research for years to come.” The massive state-of-the-art press system will reduce large component process times, from 40 hours to just four, while maintaining exceptional quality – marking a significant step towards more efficient, sustainable and scalable production methods for future aircraft generations. ✈️ Stay tuned for updates as we prepare for its arrival and installation.
