I've been to over 200 high-end golf courses around the globe. Here are 8 mistakes I always see first-timers make. https://ift.tt/XdKR2bn I (not pictured) have been to many high-end golf courses around the globe in the past few decades. Unai Huizi/Getty Images I've played golf for decades and have visited many famous golf courses around the world. I often see first-timers at high-end courses forget to check the dress code or choose the wrong tee. If you're going on a golf trip, don't overpack and check if the course has other amenities, too. I've written about golf for the past 30 years, though I've been playing since I was about 10. I've also been privileged to visit over 200 courses around the world, including legendary spots like Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, and Southern Hills — home to many PGA tournaments over the years. But I know very well that the game can frustrate and frazzle even the best players. Think strategically before booking your next golf outing or extended vacation, and avoid these mistakes I often see first-timers make when visiting high-end courses. Choosing the wrong course and tee Golf courses are like fingerprints: Each has its unique identity and characteristics. Try to choose the right one. For those new to the game, the average public municipal course is a good place to start, followed by user-friendly resort courses. Championship layouts are typically meant for competitive play. It's also crucial to play from the proper tee. Most courses have up to five different starting points on each hole for different skill levels. The back tees are for experienced players who can hit far. Choosing them can add hundreds of yards to a round, so pick your starting point carefully and with realistic expectations. Overpacking It doesn't always make sense to bring your own clubs to a golf course. Hammarby Studios/Getty Images When you're jetting off for a weekend of golf, pack light. Not only do most airlines charge hefty fees for bulky golf travel bags, but also hauling them around can be hernia-inducing. Fortunately, it's often not necessary to pack so much. Most courses are well-stocked with high-end rental clubs and sell everything from golf balls to Gatorade. Or you can even have your own gear shipped ahead to your golf course through services like Ship Sticks. Not checking to see if the course has a dress code Higher-end country clubs and resorts typically have a dress code, so look into it ahead of time. The codes often suggest collared shirts tucked into belted trousers or athletic skirts and golf shoes — no denim or tank tops. Traveling to serious golf resorts with people who don't want to play Some golf resorts have hiking trails on the property or right near it. Chris Babcock/Getty Images If you're traveling with people who prefer biking and beaching to flailing away at a tiny dimpled ball, skip the super-serious golf resorts. Instead, find a spot that has excellent courses and something fo...

10 Tips for Group Golf Trips Now is the perfect time to plan your annual golf trip with your mates/partners or friends. Read on for our top 10 tips for a successful group getaway. 1. Be Compatible Who you choose to travel with could turn a getaway into a get-me-away situation. Make sure your golf group is as solid as your 9-iron. 2. Plan Everything Fail to plan and you plan to fail. Be organized & book, buy, reserve, request & pay for as many items as you can in advance. 3. Share the Load Every member of your golfing group should share in the workload for your getaway. Allocate responsibilities to avoid burnout. Consider who would work well as group Treasurer, Tournament Director, Shopper, Cook & Housekeeper. 4. Get in Shape A golfing getaway may include extended periods of walking, playing & travelling that are outside your norm. To prepare physically, do extra walking & stretching prior to your departure. 5. Pack Well When packing for your golf trip, consider your destination, the season & time of year, the golf game you are playing over the golf trip. Things often forgotten include rangefinders, golf shoes, rain coats, golf gloves, jumpers & jackets. 6. Discuss Spending To avoid ugly arguments, ensure every member of your group understands & agrees with what is included & excluded from planned activities. 7. Communicate Maintain open communication between all group members, include everyone in all decision making about the trip before, during & after. 8. Keep Competitions Casual While there’s no harm in a little competition, too much creates headaches. Keep any golfing competitions light-hearted & trophies humorous to promote camaraderie instead of division. 9. Don’t Let a Rainy-Day Ruin Your Trip Try heading into your getaway with low expectations. The weather might turn. The accommodation & courses might not be what you hoped for. The flight might be delayed & the taxi may overcharge. But so, what? Shake it off & keep moving. 10. Use Your COVID Smarts Amp up your COVID Smarts a few weeks out from your getaway and keep it up throughout the trip. Use a mask, socially distance, sanitise your hands regularly and make sure you’re fully vaccinated at least two weeks before your departure date. Above all else, don’t forget why you’re on this golf trip: to play golf & experience new golf locations!
