I love this! I hope the awards come with a stipulation, or at least an encouragement, to have those endowments also managed by predominantly Black OCIOs (outsourced chief investment offices) and managers. Moving large sums of money right back into the hands of the usual suspects feels counter productive otherwise. We need to normalize asking..."who's managing and controlling that?" #NextEconomy #OCIO #investmentmanagement

From a workforce development standpoint, we are seeing across regions the need and demand for healthcare professional. The pandemic was hard on all of us but I think we often forget the long standing impact to our frontline healthcare professionals. In addition in 2022, only 5.7% of medical professionals identified as Black or African-American. However, 70% of Black doctors in the US are HBCU graduates. HBCU medical schools help create a diverse and highly skilled healthcare workforce and conduct vital research that benefits society. Investment into healthcare, healthcare professional, and our HBCU medical schools are more important than ever. Well done Bloomberg Philanthropies

Dr. Ruth Gottesman’s one billion dollar donation to Albert Einstein School of Medicine resulting in free medical education is transformative! The journey to becoming a physician is not only rigorous but also financially daunting. With the average medical student graduating with substantial debt, the financial barriers to entering the medical profession are higher than ever. This situation not only discourages potential talents from pursuing a medical career but also exacerbates the shortage of healthcare professionals, impacting patient care across communities. Philanthropy plays a pivotal role in this narrative. Generous donations aimed at reducing or completely eliminating the cost of medical education can change the landscape of healthcare. By alleviating the financial burden on medical students, we can open the doors to a dedicated workforce ready to tackle the challenges of modern medicine. By supporting aspiring physicians today, we are paving the way for breakthroughs in clinical research, improving patient care, and ensuring that the best and brightest can pursue a career in medicine regardless of their financial background. #Philanthropy #MedicalEducation #Healthcare #FuturePhysicians #InvestInHealth https://lnkd.in/gETkcx3W

Bloomberg Philanthropies made an unprecedented $600 million donation to four historically Black medical schools—Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science University—marks a significant milestone in the fight for health equity. This landmark investment demonstrates how private industry and academic partnerships can prepare the next generation of physicians and address critical health disparities. By strengthening the financial foundations of these historically Black institutions, this funding empowers them to continue their mission of diversifying the medical field. Increased endowments mean better management of tuition costs, more innovative research opportunities, and enhanced support for the academic and professional development of future Physicians. Evidence shows that Black patients have better health outcomes when treated by Black physicians, yet only 6% of U.S. doctors are Black. This partnership between Bloomberg Philanthropies and HBCU medical schools is a powerful example of how strategic investments can create lasting change. Advancing Health Equity is dedicated to partnering with organizations on their journey to eliminate bias and discrimination in healthcare, cultivate an equitable organizational culture, and improve health outcomes. Join us in celebrating this significant step towards a more equitable healthcare future! #HealthEquity #MedicalEducation #HBCUMedicine #FuturePhysicians #EquitableHealthcare #HealthDisparities #DiverseMedicalWorkforce #PhilanthropyInAction #HealthcareTransformation #BreakingBarriers https://lnkd.in/e4BG9uDa

More should do this.
An amazing story of philanthropy and the impact it will have on future physicians as they graduate without the burden of medical school tuition debt. The intent of the donor was not self aggrandizement, but the desire to bring equity to medical education by opening up opportunities of care in underserved areas. We should all strive towards impactful behavior such as this.

Education must be free. Charging students tuition? I think that's the worst you can do to your future entrepreneurs, medical doctors, state runners, reflective minds, high profile managers: 'Free' in that everyone who is gifted enough, needs to be supported to be able to live up to their best, and that way, pay back, and pay forward, to their communities - to society, peers, parents, children, future citizens. It should be in the interest of every, any state, to support their citizens to help build everyone's future. Those who don't (want to) invest into public higher education, and believe in private solutions of educating, do not grasp the incredible rift between privilege and gift. Speaking of parents, and how mine have given me a gift: I'm stating this as someone who comes from a workers' background, and who had the privilege, thanks to my parents' sparse savings, and other (not many) supporting sources, to having been able to study (at the University of Tuebingen); then, to study abroad, at the University of Texas at Austin; and then, to earn my doctorate at the ETH Zurich.
A Transformational Gift Leads to Free Tuition in Perpetuity A historic gift will ensure that no student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine will have to pay tuition again. Dr. Philip Ozuah, president and CEO of Montefiore Einstein, the umbrella organization for Einstein and Montefiore Health System, today announced that Einstein has received that transformational gift from Ruth L. Gottesman, Ed.D., Chair of the Einstein Board of Trustees and Montefiore Health System board member. “This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it. Additionally, it will free up and lift our students, enabling them to pursue projects and ideas that might otherwise be prohibitive. We will be reminded of the legacy this historic gift represents each spring as we send another diverse class of physicians out across the Bronx and around the world to provide compassionate care and transform their communities,” said Dr. Yaron Tomer, the Marilyn and Stanley Katz Dean at Einstein. #MedEd #science #health #MedicalSchool #MedicalEducation #philanthropy #Bronx
