The Holloways of Dorset are a series of historic, naturally sunken roads and footways in the United Kingdom that range between 300 and 3,000 years old. The word ‘holloway’ comes from the Old English word “hola weg” meaning sunken road. The unique geology of the area, consisting of soft, chalky sandstone, has resulted in the holloways sinking as much as 6 metres below the surrounding land. The recessed thoroughfares of Dorset connect the coast to inland villages and were likely used to transport goods to and from the ships in the harbours. While some of the roads are now inaccessible due to the quality of the surface and size restrictions, others may be used for low volumes of vehicular traffic.
