Okay, enough is enough. 10,000 people have been made redundant in the #gamesindustry since the beginning of 2023!! Studio closures, downsizing and complete canning of projects has led to one of the worse years in recent memory, but I am hopeful and here's why? WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE!! Late 2008 and almost all of 2009 saw 11,500 redundancies across the globe, everyone thought then, as they mostly do now, that the industry was in decline, despite three major console releases in the 2 years previous. Many studios closed their doors for good and others went into hibernation, however, what was true then is also true today, we saw many studios taking their first steps or starting to grow. Some of those that were laid off decided to start their own venture and other established smaller studios took advantage of the talent flooded market, and invited people in they would usually have had a hard time competing for. So yes, the #layoffs are horrible, and honestly the number of studios choosing to make this decision so close to holidays is even more heart breaking, but I am confident that each and everyone of you will be just fine in one way or another. You may have all the tools you need to start your own studio and seek investment, or you may just be the missing piece of the jigsaw for an Indie that's working on their first major release, or you could land at another AAA working on your dream IP. Phoenix Labs was silently acquired by Forte a year ago — the transaction was never made public! This might shock many, but let me provide a brief timeline of how Phoenix Labs reached up to the point of 160-170 layoffs last month. In 2020, Phoenix Labs was acquired by Free Fire creator Garena for a whopping $150M. And then, in 2023, Phoenix Labs laid off employees in the months of May and December out of the blue. Apparently, Forte had bought Phoenix Labs from Garena and was responsible for calling the shots on layoffs. Even the most recent decision of layoffs that impacted more than 150 individuals was called by Forte. (Credits to Kris Morness) Besides the layoffs, Phoenix Labs also cancelled a game that was weeks away from releasing in early access. Scrapping a game means removing years of effort and hard work that the game developers put into building it. Every day, game developers are losing more than what they make for a living. It is just plain sad to see how the world’s leading entertainment industry is still unable to pay the creators who make it a leading industry. They need all the support they can get, so to bring them maximum visibility, I request all of you to share and make this reach recruiters and game studios currently hiring. Resuming my highlights, this is the second shoutout to the devs of Phoenix Labs. Noah Watkins — A UX Lead of Phoenix Labs who was once a UI Artist/Designer for Rocket League at Psyonix. Noah has designed user experiences and handled UI/UX art & design for AAA studios like Amazon Games and PlayStation Studios. Other renowned titles he has worked on are DC Universe Online, H1Z1, and EverQuest. Omar Amador — He is one talented Technical Artist who has worked as a Character Technical Artist for Remedy Entertainment on Quantum Break. And it doesn’t end there! Previously, Omar worked as a Technical Animator for the Nintendo subsidiary Retro Studios on Donkey Kong and Metroid Prime 4. Michael Vicente — Has an experience of 10+ years with Blizzard Entertainment as a senior level Artist before becoming the Principal Artist for Phoenix Labs. Michael is regarded as an artist with ‘legendary’ sculpting skills who brings his own unique style. Andrew Kane — A highly experienced Technical Lead Game and Online Services Engineer! With over 13 years of experience in the gaming industry, he has worked for AAA studios like Riot Games, Blizzard Entertainment, and Crystal Dynamics. Sean Phillips — An expert game marketer who has worked with studios like Codemasters, 2K, PlayStation, and Creative Assembly.
