One thing I've been advising the many junior/entry level (even above) game devs I speak to who are struggling [/understatement!] to get their break is to keep an eye out for promising start ups... These companies tend to be.. 👉🏽A little more lenient on their hiring criteria 👉🏽A little more obscure, thusly less competition when applying 👉🏽More approachable/reachable which could allow you to strike up a short or long term relationship with the hiring managers or even founders Even if they don't have the role for you right now. Get connected up with them, follow their pages, politely introduce yourself in a sincere, non-generic fashion, get your passion across. Gameloft laid off employees without even a single day's notice. Imagine arriving at work, go about your morning routine, brewing coffee in the same machine, settling at your desk, resuming where you left the last day, only to find out an hour later that your access has been revoked. Hey folks, so you heard the news? The CEO of Unity just stepped down. Now, does that put any of us devs back in a comfort zone? Nah, not really. Let me break it down real quick: 1) Is the CEO stepping down? That's like a red flag screaming, "Long-term strategy? What's that?" 2) Odds are, if the head honcho is out, there's some serious "What the heck do we do now?" convos happening behind closed doors. 3) The whole pricing shake-up wasn't just a one-man show. It's a public company, people. So, yeah, more than one exec should probably pack their bags. 4) As for Unity finding its groove post-CEO-exit? That's the billion-dollar question. Bottom line? This is a Band-Aid on a bullet wound, not some well-thought-out game plan. As developers, we can't bank on a partnership that's shaky. Stay tuned.
