Jeddah Tower or Burj Jeddah, previously known as Kingdom Tower, is a skyscraper construction project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Soon, a new marvel is poised to take over this title – Jeddah Tower, a neo-futuristic landmark planned in Saudi Arabia. Designed by the renowned Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, Jeddah Tower is set to reach an astounding height of 3,281 feet. Scheduled for completion in the next four to five years, this colossal structure will overshadow the Statue of Liberty by nearly eleven times. The design, described by Smith and Gill, draws inspiration from Saudi Arabian symbolism, representing the kingdom’s future growth with its sleek, asymmetrical form that echoes the elegance of palm fronds reaching towards the sky. Situated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the tower will become a prominent feature of the city’s skyline, symbolizing progress and innovation. Jeddah, the second-largest city in the country, borders the Red Sea and boasts architectural gems like the Penang Floating Mosque and the historic Al Balad district. Jeddah Tower’s design embraces a neo-futuristic aesthetic, marked by avant-garde elements and advanced technology. Renderings depict a sleek, tapering tower inspired by the graceful curves of palm fronds native to the region. Construction of Jeddah Tower began in 2013 but faced interruptions, notably in 2018 due to issues within the Binladin Group, the project’s contractor. The COVID-19 pandemic further delayed progress. However, in September 2023, reports confirmed that construction had resumed. The Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), responsible for the project, has announced that construction is back on track, aiming for completion in the next four to five years. Despite past setbacks, JEC is actively seeking contractors and expects to finalize selections soon. At the time of the pause, roughly one-third of Jeddah Tower had been completed. Once finished, it will soar to a height of 3,281 feet, surpassing Burj Khalifa by about 564 feet. Jeddah Tower will function as a mixed-use complex, incorporating residential, commercial, and office spaces. Additionally, it will feature the world’s highest observation deck, a Four Seasons hotel, and a vast outdoor balcony initially designed as a helipad.

We're delighted to share the completion of the design for AVA at Palm Jumeirah, Dorchester Collection Dubai by OMNIYAT, which we had the honor of leading the structural design of the project with U+A as Lead Design Consultant. Located in Palm Jumeriah, Dubai, the project is a high end luxurious residential high-rise building having a height of 125m. Key Structural challenges involved: 📌 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠: Combination of CFT, RCC, composite columns, steel frame with large cantilever spans up to 7m was utilized to provide flexibility in design and to provide unobstructed views. 📌 𝐈𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐑𝐅𝐒 (𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬), Gravity Forces Resisting System (GFRS) primarily comprised of columns supplemented by a network of floor beams. The columns are envisaged to be Composite filled tube sections as they: ➤ Offer good stiffness towards the cantilever portion. ➤ Offer higher strength/moment capacity towards the stepping column solution. ➤ Work well with the connection of the steel beam framing / stepping column junction detail. 📌 𝐄𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞: Due to the position of the core, an inherent eccentricity between the centre of mass and centre of rigidity occurs and this was mitigated in the structural framing solutions. 📌 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞: None of the floor plates are typical and cantilevers are extending up to to seven metres and made serviceability limits states very critical. 📌 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬: Owing to the different column arrangement at the penthouse levels, Transfer arrangement at the was envisaged using outrigger walls that supplement as lateral stability elements. Collaborating closely with the client, architects, and other stakeholders, we've transformed vision into reality, ensuring that every beam, column, and connection serves its purpose with precision and elegance. The Shard vs. The Burj Khalifa – A Tale of Two Heights and Engineering Feats Skyscrapers are more than just buildings—they’re statements of ambition, engineering, and precision. Two of the most iconic in the world, The Shard (London, 310m) and Burj Khalifa (Dubai, 828m), stand as testaments to what’s possible when vision meets engineering. The Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, soars almost 2.7 times the height of The Shard. Constructed with an advanced buttressed core design, it had to withstand extreme wind loads and the searing Dubai heat. Its glass façade—over 103,000 square meters—had to be designed to reflect sunlight and minimize heat absorption, all while being installed at dizzying heights. Meanwhile, The Shard, though shorter, posed its own challenges. Rising in a historic city with strict planning regulations, its construction was a logistical puzzle. Its irregular pyramidal shape, made up of 11,000 individual glass panels, meant glazing was a particular challenge. Each piece had to be precisely angled to create the shimmering effect Renzo Piano envisioned, all while contending with London’s unpredictable weather. Two buildings, two engineering marvels—both proving that height isn't the only factor in architectural complexity. Whether piercing the Dubai sky or redefining London’s skyline, these structures remind us that pushing boundaries is never easy—but always worth it. #Engineering #Architecture #Skyscrapers #Construction
