Find your foods je ne sais quoi A cake may be a cake and a pie a pie, but what extra elements can we enhance? Sometimes that’s the shot we want to show of our food, not just the food itself. Here are a few ideas of what to do with our food: 🎈Sprinkle sugar or flour 🎈Pour milk, wine, beer 🎈Drizzle syrup or oil 🎈Melt ice cream or cheese 🎈Pull apart a stringy pizza 🎈Toss food in a pan 🎈Whisk cream or buttercream 🎈Crack eggs or nuts 🎈Squeeze lemons and limes Or……. Just drizzle some cherry coulis over a black forest trifle Thanks Liz O'Keefe for creating such a great trifle. Did you go to a firework display? I didn't go to a display, we have sparklers in the garden - more to show you on that tomorrow! I do always remember having bonfire toffee when we were huddled round the bonfire as a kid. So I made some, here's the recipe: INGREDIENTS oil, for greasing 450g dark brown sugar 125ml hot water ¼ tsp cream of tartar 115g black treacle 115g golden syrup METHOD STEP 1 Line the base/sides of an A4 sized tin and grease it. STEP 2 Put the sugar and hot water in a heavy bottomed pan and heat gently until the sugar is dissolved. STEP 3 Once the sugar has dissolved add all the ingredients and pop a sugar thermometer in. STEP 4 Bring to the boil and boil until you reach soft crack on your thermometer (270/140C) As soon as it reaches the temp, tip it into your tin and leave it to cool. STEP 5 Once cool remove it from the tin a break up with a toffee hammer or rolling pin. Tastes great - but watch your teeth, it's problematic! Is Beans on Toast a mundane meal? Not if you add some levitational magic in to the dish. Here we have the beans falling from the tin on to slices of toast which too are falling on to the plate. Salt and pepper ready for seasoning and the cutlery ready for diving straight in. The concept of beans on toast is said to have been invented by one of the executives at The Kraft Heinz Company back in 1927. And here we are almost 100 years later still eating it. In Britain we eat more baked beans per year than the rest of the world put together. For breakfast with a fry up, for lunch on toast, for dinner with a jacket potato - the versatile beans can be used in so many ways. A bit like photography. There is no limit to the ways a dish can be created behind the lens, creating eye catching images that are great attention grabbers. Creative photography will always challenge the everyday. How many mince pies are consumed in the UK at Christmas? According to Good Housekeeping... The UK eats nearly 800 million of them each year. And budget retailer Aldi expects to sell over 180 thousand during the first week of their launch alone! Did you know mince pies used to be rectangular? In Tudor times they were shaped like a manger and often had a pastry baby Jesus on the lid. They were made from 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his disciples and were all symbolic to the Christmas story. As well as dried fruit such as raisins, prunes and figs, they included lamb or mutton to represent the shepherds and spices (cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg) for the Wise Men. It was only after the 16th century that the mince pie adopted a round shape. It was very usual in the Middle Ages to mix meat with sweeter ingredients such as figs, raisins and honey. Can you remember the Friends episode. the one where Rachel makes trifle and it ends up with meat in it? Not sure how edible we would find it now! I was hoping to give you a definitive number of how many different mince pies there are but with so many fillings, different toppings and copious amounts of interesting decorations... it's impossible. I personally choose the prettiest ones, so I can photograph them!
