This Saturday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This is a day dedicated to highlighting the often overlooked issue of elder abuse, putting a spotlight on the prevalence mental and physical abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people in our communities. Studies from Seniors Rights Victoria show that 14.8% of Australians aged 65 years and over had experienced at least one recognised form of elder abuse over the previous 12 months. This suggests that 160,000 older Victorians are experiencing elder abuse each year to a level they are willing to identify to researchers. This is horrific and far too prevalent. As outlined in the United Nations Principles for Older People, “Older persons should be able to live in dignity and security and be free of exploitation and physical or mental abuse.” Heartland Bank helps Australians release their home equity to provide financial security in retirement, and we have extensive processes in place to detect and reduce the risk of financial elder abuse. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) launched the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) at the United Nations on June 15, 2006 in an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse. The UN General Assembly has officially recognized WEAAD every year since 2011. WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for our communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders, and reaffirm our country’s commitment to the principle of justice for all. When we come together, we can prevent elder abuse from happening. We can put support services in place, and direct community resources toward addressing elder abuse. Our country must reaffirm our commitment to justice and create a sturdy structure of support that will benefit us all as we get older. Elder abuse is widespread. Every year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that elder abuse is significantly under-reported, in part because so many of our communities lack the social supports that would make it easier for those who experience abuse to report it. Research suggests that as few as 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse come to the attention of authorities. Older people throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation. Elder abuse also creates health care and legal costs for our society. However, we can change this. Learn more: https://bit.ly/45c3RQI #brokenarrowpolice #WEAAD #awareness #support #elder #unite

Today is Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Often, older people are mistreated due to the lack of supports and/or community. Abuse can come in many forms, including physical or emotional abuse to financial mistreatment. These abuses leave older Americans with both visible and invisible scars that can impact them for the rest of their lives. It can happen anywhere — at home, at work, or online. Here are four tips to help seniors: 1. Stay Connected: Regularly check in with older family members and friends. Social isolation can increase the risk of elder abuse. For Bay Area seniors, connect with one of our senior centers: https://hubs.la/Q02BZkY90 2. Educate Yourself: Learn to recognize the signs of elder abuse, such as unexplained injuries, sudden changes in financial situations, or withdrawal from normal activities. If your loved ones needs change, consider a Sequoia Living Life Plan Community: https://hubs.la/Q02BZC9f0 3. Report Suspected Abuse: If you suspect elder abuse, report it to the authorities immediately. 4. Empower Seniors: Encourage older adults to speak up about any mistreatment and to stay informed about their rights and the resources available to them. Together, we can make a difference and ensure our seniors live with dignity and respect. #WEAAD

All people deserve to live free from violence. June 15 marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On this day, we encourage everyone to “grow the conversation” about elder abuse, which affects one in eight older people. Elder abuse can take many different forms. In addition to physical forms of abuse, elders can be victimized by financial abuse (stealing, misusing funds, withholding funds), neglect (failing or refusing to provide medical care/prescriptions, social support, clothing or food) and abandonment (deserting or isolating an older person). Perpetrators might be the elder's family or caregivers, decreasing the likelihood of the elder reaching out for support. Since 2006, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day has brought attention to the need for all citizens to take responsibility for preventing elder abuse and increase the visibility of elder abuse by highlighting events sharing information and promoting resources and services that can help increase seniors’ safety and well-being. 👉️ For a list of online resources, please visit the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council at https://lnkd.in/gbUGPdKe 👉️ If you or a loved one are concerned about elder abuse, call our 24-hour crisis line for information, support, or referrals at 403-934-6634.

1 in 6 older adults, over 60 years old, experience some form of abuse annually. This translates to roughly 141 million people worldwide suffering in silence. Elder abuse is a global crisis demanding immediate attention. The problem is significantly underreported. Fear, shame, and dependence on abusers often prevent victims from speaking up. This hidden epidemic has devastating consequences. Elder abuse can lead to physical injuries, depression, anxiety, and even death. We must break the silence. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let's raise awareness, empower communities, and demand stronger protections for our valued seniors. They deserve to live with dignity and respect, free from abuse.
