Some stats that we should all know from Jil Littlejohn Bostick: - "If you are born in poverty, you have a 95% chance of remaining in poverty. - "60% of wealthy students graduate from college. 16% of low-income students graduate from college. - "89% of first-generation students spend 6 years in college and leave without a degree. MENTORING MONDAY: "Till you see somebody do it, you are not sure it can be done". NOBODY thought the 4 minute mile could be broken. One month later, someone breaks HIS record. Next month. Record broken. Now there are over 1,700 people (including kids) that have done this. This is no different than mentoring an at-risk youth. They have no clue to what can be achieved. 😉 So I did a thing… It feels like a lifetime ago, but two months ago, I was flown out to New York to appear on the TV show "Wake Up with Marci," a talk show with heart ❤️ 📺 This show is broadcast to 2.8 million viewers across New York, Long Island, and New Jersey 👀 Once the show streamed live, it was shared across numerous channels, including YouTube. (Link below) I was on a cruise when it aired, so this is my first catch-up 🙃 The interview reflects on my journey from challenging beginnings to empowering others. Marci called it a testament to resilience and transformation 💥 We explored breaking the cycles of adversity and guiding individuals toward authentic success and self-mastery. Life is a constant journey, and I continually push myself out of my comfort zone to grow and reflect—just like traveling to New York on my own 😬 My passion and work as a coach and mentor are rooted in the belief that our traumas do not define us. Instead, healing from trauma propels us forward because there is nothing more powerful than a shared lived experience. No textbook can offer the care, compassion, and empathy that comes from shared experiences, which is the core of my work with young people. A human approach in leadership is key 🔑 Caring for others, listening to their thoughts and ideas, and sharing the reasons behind your decisions—makes all the difference. People will follow you because they want to, not because they have to. This was evident in my recent mentoring programme at an alternative provision school. #hugesuccess Offering students the space to expand their zone of genius and navigate paths they might not have considered is incredibly rewarding. There is so much joy in watching others succeed and standing side by side on their journey. Dear Higher Education, You may want to take some notes. Putting the system on notice. Lots to unpack, but should take seriously. Future generations hang in the balance and we should be paying attention. For me, one quote stood out above all else. While it wasn't the focus of the TEDX talk, I think it deserves the highlight as it fits well into his discussion points: "Higher Ed is about taking unremarkable kids and making them remarkable." We seem to have gotten away from this premise, and we need to get back to it. Well done #scottgalloway!
