As an Indigenous educator teaching future teachers, I find myself constantly advocating for inclusivity and cultural safety in classrooms. Yet, as an IBPOC parent, I struggle to send my own children to school where they often feel like they don’t belong. Being visibly different in a system that hasn’t yet embraced true diversity makes it hard for them to feel safe and included. Some schools are ahead when it comes to cultural inclusivity, and I’m thankful for that progress. But as my mom, a residential school survivor, often says: “I guess more work needs to be done yet.” It’s not enough for only some children to feel welcome — every school must commit to this work, ensuring cultural safety for all. On top of that, as a parent of a neurodiverse children, I see firsthand how much more our schools need to learn about embracing neurodiversity. Our children deserve spaces where their differences aren’t just tolerated but celebrated. We owe it to them to create schools that are truly inclusive, safe, and understanding. I say this out of respect for those doing the work and out of frustration for those not willing to.

The idea of an inclusive Education is to integrate children with disabilities and minority groups into the mainstream educational systems and not have separate schools. If that must be successful then Educational Policies on Inclusive Education must focus on provision of materials, structures, curriculums and trainings that will favour both able and disable children in one classroom and in one school. One of the key areas that policy makers should focus on is including the study of "Sign Language" in basic school curriculums from Kindergarten. This will make it possible for all children to interact easily with hearing impaired children in the same class comfortably without any prejudice. It will also contribute largely to the success of inclusivity in any jurisdiction. The training should begin from teacher training colleges where Teachers and Educators are trained, to make available enough human resources to make such policies successful. It must also be a core subject and not an elective one so all Educators and teachers can have basic knowledge in it. I will later upload a paper I wrote on sign languages. Thank you © Sebastian P.K. An interesting week to date, fired up on Sunday by Tom Shakespeare's A Point of View after a low couple of days mithering about inclusion. What can I do? I have worked hard to learn and qualify and I continue to learn from others. I am about to start a new qualification "Inclusive education" with University of Aberdeen. My own ND tends to squash my confidence. 📚Ignacio Estrada's words mean so much to us at MWC. 💪🏾A common experience we share across our team is standing up for Disability Justice in education by challenging ingrained biases, even when it's uncomfortable. 👩🏾🏫💬 SUNDAY STORYTIME: Picture being in an IEP meeting advocating for a Black 10th-grade male student with emotional disabilities. The general education English teacher refuses to adapt her instruction, citing that her class works just fine for kids who respond to her preferred lecture teaching style. She is doubly down on she does not want him in her room and insisting that he belongs in a self-contained English classroom if he needed so many accommodations... in front of the student. When I spoke up about how this was a wildly inappropriate, biased, and deficit-based mindset, I was reprimanded for making HER upset. We have to look intently on the impact it has had on persons with disabilities in accessing education .So that we can refine all the inclusive practices in educational institutions and many others. #SpecialEducationNeeds #InclusiveEducation
