𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙘𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙣𝙚? As a 👭women's empowerment and leadership coach who helps women aspiring to public office or considering a career transition, I am committed to leaving a legacy that empowers future 👨👩👦👦 generations of leaders. One area in which I desire to leave an impact is through 📚 education.  When I was a child, school 🏫 was my safe place and I loved to learn.  Despite running away from home as a teenager, dropping out of high school my senior year and enduring many challenges, I still graduated with my class because I had taken extra classes since my freshman year.  My love of learning and those early 🐦⬛bird classes really paid off for me.  After scraping funds together, I managed to get into college, but got 🤰pregnant with my first child so I left the university, went back🏠 home to raise my son, and started community college.  Again, I never lost my 💖 love of learning or my desire to make positive contributions to my community.  Through all of this adversity, the lessons my parents taught me about the🚪 doors an education would open were not lost and I spent more than a decade of my life pursuing my 🎓degrees.  When I graduated 👩🎓 with my first degree, I knew I wanted to help other students at my high school who may have traveled a similar path as me.  Fast forward to 2018 where I am serving as the first Black 💪mayor of my hometown.  I knew that I was uniquely positioned to use my platform to leverage my story with stakeholders.  In doing so, I raised 📣 awareness around the needs of Black students and established the Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong’s African American Civic Leaders Scholarship. To date, this scholarship has supported 20 🧑🎓 students and provided each of them a $2000 scholarship totaling more than more than $40,000. I am extremely 🙏grateful for the many community members who have continued to support this scholarship every year.  And I am proud that this 🏆scholarship, the community of people who invest in it, and the young people we are educating is part of my legacy. I have so much more in store for the 📡 future. Thank you, Dr. Shaun Harper, for your tireless effort and leadership in the national racial equity and DEI effort. I first met Dr. Harper, aka Harp, as his graduate student at University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education in 2012. Already by then, Shaun had distinguished himself as a national leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion study and practice—well before “DEI work” was radically weaponized and politicized by its opponents and turned into a bogeyman. Shaun is now a Provost Professor at the USC Rossier School of Education and an appointed University Professor. Among countless accomplishments and career accolades, he is the founder and executive director of the USC Race and Equity Center. But most importantly, I consider him a dear friend and mentor. What I learned in 2012 holds just as true—if not truer—today in 2024. Those who work to oppose, bury, or dissolve DEI work are fearful of it. Fearful because it uncovers prejudice inherent in traditional power structures that have have been perpetuated for decades, if not centuries. And there are plenty of folks determined to keep traditional power structures exactly where and how they are. As Harp taught me, “We’ve been about this work, and we will continue to show up as our authentic selves and be about this work. At Varce Girls' Learning Hub, our primary objective is to empower girls by equipping them with digital skills. However, we go beyond mere technical education. Our curriculum integrates subjects like civic education, fostering critical discussions on justice, the rule of law, and societal resilience. We are proud to have used a portion of Civics Academy online material into our curriculum. LEAVING THINGS BEHIND I love that hat. 🧢 Sorry. I mean I loved that hat. It was a great hat that kept me warm during a lovely, but bitterly cold day, during my trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty in New York. February 2018. But it didn’t come back home with me because I took it off and forgot to pick it up again when we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art the following day. 😕 I’m not just name-dropping about the places I visited when I went to NYC. I’m remembering how bereft I felt when I left something behind that I was attached to. How I didn’t want to leave it, but it went away from me anyway. I readjusted (I had a replacement hat), but it wasn’t the same for a while. But I got used to it. To me, if you are a school leader it’s a little bit like starting your diversity, equity and inclusion journey. You like what you have and it is just fine. But at some point, if you don’t take care, you may find yourself in a position where the comfort of not starting your diversity, equity and inclusion journey pulls you up short, forcing you to readjust. I can help. 😊 Dont wait until you have to change, make the change under your own power, your own timing and for the benefit of your school community. Even if you don’t know what to do, let’s talk about it.
