If we want to realize a “digital democracy,” we must reimagine how technology is used and invest in building new tools to meet the challenges of public trust and participation. In E. Glen Weyl and Audrey Tang's new book, they argue “technology and democracy can be each other’s greatest allies.”

Once you've established that News Corp does not itself respect Australia's sovereignty (see: https://lnkd.in/gD8P2Q9n), then your mind is freed up to begin exploring the other reasons why the News Corp is telling its readers to be afraid of Big Tech (see: https://lnkd.in/gD8P2Q9n), and then to start to draw conclusions about what needs to be done to analyse and expose the issues that are arising from the threat the Murdoch family / News Corp, pose to our sovereignty. There's something else going on behind the scenes. And it has a link to Australia's security services, cover ups, fake news, our failure to allow whistleblower protections, the lack of reform of access of lobbyists to our parliament, and the refusal of our parliament to outlaw slush funds and pork barrelling to win elections. https://lnkd.in/gTTRqG9M

And so the new chapter of my career begins. I'm now a few days into my new role as senior resident fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab's Democracy + Tech Initiative. Yes, I know it's a long title... My work will focus on how countries are approaching digital governance/regulatory issues like content moderation, competition, privacy and, of course, artificial intelligence. My aim is to support governments, regulators and civil society in shaping rules (where necessary) that are centered in democratic principles. Yes, lofty aims. But why not aim high, amirite? What does that actually look like? To be honest, I'm still figuring it out. (If you want to chat, I'm on mscott (at) atlanticcouncil (dot) org. But, as a first step, I want to help make #socialmedia companies more transparent and accountable by giving outsiders the ability to better understand how these platforms actually work — and what their impact (good and bad) is on wider society. For now, that includes Europe's new rules, known as the #DigitalServicesAct. My hope is that other countries/regions will follow suit. For Tech Policy Press, I sketched out how I want to do that. https://lnkd.in/eesjpuUb 👇 "To maximize the potential of Europe’s transparency and accountability rules, we must find ways to widen the scope of who can conduct such research; create user-friendly tools that allow non-technical subject experts to participate; and ensure — above all — that people’s privacy and security on social media is protected against potential harm. "For meaningful research — let alone greater corporate transparency — to take place, there needs to be a clear plan to turn such rulemaking into a hard nosed reality."
We’re thrilled to welcome Mark Scott to the Atlantic Council as our new Senior Resident Fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab’s Democracy + Tech Initiative! 🎉 With a decade of experience as a global expert in digital policy, including his leadership in tech coverage at POLITICO and deep dives into AI governance, Mark brings unparalleled insights to our team. At DFRLab, Mark will expand the Democracy + Tech Initiative’s ongoing work around comparative digital policy, focusing on transparency, accountability, and best practices for global tech platforms. His expertise will play a key role in shaping the future of tech regulation, including efforts tied to the European Union’s Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act. We couldn’t be more excited to see how his work will help promote democratic values in the digital age...Welcome to the team Mark! Read the full press release here: https://bit.ly/47lTDOY

President, IMPACT Institute for the Digital Economy - Technology Alchemist Innovating at the nexus AI/IoT/Blockchain Awarded Research Chair and Professor of Artificial Intelligence
... and THAT'S A WRAP ! Dr. Martin Kuppinger just finished the closing Keynote at the European Identity Conference here in Berlin https://lnkd.in/dGyRZsCz with a bunch of takeaways and a super-long "To do" list for participants, once they return to their office. You will be able to listen to all the session recordings soon, including this one - so here I'll only pinpoint to a few of my own learnings, light bulb and "AHA" moments, and paradoxes I encountered in various talks: - ESTA requires folks from outside US to provide their social media login credentials! 🤔 (That much for privacy, individual empowerment and ... respect...); Thank you Joni Brennan for pointing to this as well as to major challenges in the disinformation space. - You have to log into Facebook to join a class action against Facebook!... 🤯 - When denial of consent means denial of service, is that consent?? (Consent is dead given how it's manipulated! Thank you Eve Maler for this insight and for an amazing talk underlining such critical issues that confront us daily 👏👏👏). - The purpose of a system is what it does, not what we say it is... Thank you Ian Glazer for the perspective of involving "counselors" in managing digital identity. - Standards are about built-in values and reflect the choices we make in this regard. I learned this from the talk of Dr. Michael B. Jones - Consequentialism (a new term I learned), which means preventing someone from breaking the law (e.g. speeding) by informing them of the consequences (aka a signal that there's a speed trap ahead will determine most rational drivers to slow down...) - When you invented the ship you invented also the shipwreck- then you put lighthouses to help guide the ships. (I collected this from the Panel "Navigating the Storm" 😉). Great awareness in a world of constant impossible to control tech advancement... - To make citizens happy is to have them controlled - freedom comes with responsibility, which involves accountability for our choices, so we cannot blame anyone else if we make bad choices... 😉 - Decentralizing means "liberating and empowering". It is the substrate enabling collective intelligence to emerge. Grateful for the opportunity to speak on two Panels about the decentralized future *with* AGI along with luminaries in the field https://lnkd.in/eV3it64C I have met so many amazing experts and thinkers from whose perspectives I learned so much, including at the Special VIP CISO dinner where I snapped a pic with Dr. Kuppinger in-between conversations about the contorsioned state of our world these days and attempts at brainstorms on how to fix things... 🤯🤯🤯 Thank you Scott David and Joerg Resch for the invite and warm intro to this amazing community!! I cannot wait to return... Until then know that you will be missed ❤️❤️❤️ #KuppingerCole KuppingerCole Analysts AG #eic24 #ciso

As we embark on transformative journey of discovery, it is essential to remain mindful of the ethical implications inherent in the use of data and technology in social science research. Issues such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the digital divide must be carefully considered and addressed to ensure that our research endeavors uphold principles of fairness, transparency, and social responsibility.
