Conversations about the #PlasticsTreaty are as diverse as they are complex. Stakeholders from every corner of the world, representing every industry, are bringing their opinions and prioritises, each with their own semantic nuances. Last week, together with the Plastic Health Council, Dr Pete Myers is brought the SCIENCE to the table to cut through the noise. Speaking on CBC/Radio-Canada's The Current with Mark Kelley, Pete addressed the elephant in the room – the health effects of plastic. Armed with scientific knowledge that wasn’t available when plastics were first invented, we now know that waste management methods, such as recycling, fall short of their promises, and can amplify the toxicity of plastic. As Sian Sutherland aptly phrases it, recycling is a “figleaf of consumerism”. For too long, it has been a license to produce plastic at levels that our planet cannot sustain, under the guise of environmentalism. With over 16,000 chemicals in plastic, half of which have never been tested for human safety, the threat is undeniable. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastic are linked to causing infertility, cancer, cognitive disorders and auto-immune diseases. The science is clear. We can no longer afford to pay lip service to the evidence. The UN Global Plastics Treaty must face up to the true cost of plastic on human health. This week Merri Creek Management Committee joined hundreds of civil society groups across the world, calling on UN member states to negotiate a new global treaty to address the global plastic pollution crisis. In 2022, UN member states endorsed a resolution to create an agreement by the end of 2024. The resolution would support Sustainable Development Goal #12 - responsible consumption and production. According to our 2023 litter data, plastics (in many forms, both hard and soft) remain in the top five litter items collected by our community litter clean up teams. Plastics in the environment are a hazard to individual species, pollute and degrade the aquatic environment, and are aesthetically unpleasing.
