The month between the last day of classes at Fuqua and the first day of my internship has brought me plenty of time to relax, which mainly consisted of my favorite way to unwind: reading. 🤓
I read on airplanes, at the beach, on the couch, and while fighting off pollen on my back porch. A real highlight was finishing The Algebra of Wealth by Scott Galloway (a favorite of mine since taking a Section course in 2022.)
There’s a lot to his book, but something that stood out for me is one of Scott’s hotter topics: finding work in the thing you’re good at -- not necessarily *just* what you’re passionate about. He wrote that personality tests like the Myers-Briggs framework can provide helpful direction to folks early in their careers. In my first job after graduating from The University of Alabama, we completed a company-wide personality test and discussed the findings as a team. I remember feeling struck by the startling accuracy of my results: I’m impatient, have a penchant for taking (fast!) action, and find the greatest fulfillment in high-impact work. In the months leading up to our first class at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business, we were also tasked with completing a personality test: this time the CliftonStrengths Assessment (mentioned by Galloway in his book.)
Looking back at these assessments, it's clear that self-awareness is key to finding that sweet spot of fulfillment. While pursuing your passions is important, it's just as crucial to understand what gets you fired up. The "algebra of wealth" is about cracking that code of merging your talents, motivations, and ambitions into authentic and meaningful work.
