Arguments start today for #JohnsonvGrantsPass, the most significant case to reach #SCOTUS on homelessness in a long time. The case will, in essence, determine whether homelessness can be criminalized, potentially overriding the Appeals Court decision in Martin v Boise, which has protected the right to sleep outside when no other shelter options are available. I have seen Martin v Boise be skirted relentlessly, and can only imagine the outcomes if cities are empowered to fine and imprison folks for lacking housing. Today, #SCOTUS will begin to hear oral arguments in the case of #JohnsonvGrantsPass. This case could make it legal for a local government to arrest or fine people for sleeping outside even when adequate shelter is not available, despite all the evidence that shows criminalizing homelessness only makes the problem worse. Arresting people for sleeping on the streets only keeps people homeless for longer and distracts from the solutions to homelessness that we know work, like allocating more resources to building affordable housing and supporting organizations that provide services and relief to neighbors in need. We'll continue to share information as this case unfolds in the Supreme Court, but we encourage everyone to use this as an opportunity to engage in discussions with your friends, families, co-workers and neighbors about the solutions to homelessness we know work, and why we as a nation might declare a war on poor people instead of poverty. #HomelessnessIsSolvable

Too often we look at the issues of housing scarcity and "revolving door" justice system involvement as being discrete, separate challenges. They aren’t. Housing is a necessity when it comes to both preventing offending and re-incarceration. Without a roof over one’s head, it’s next to impossible to address the risk factors for justice involvement. As communities across the province grapple with unprecedented levels of homelessness, this report serves as a wake up call. It makes it clear we must establish dedicated housing options to break this cycle of homelessness and jail, and build safer and healthier communities for all. #housingfirst #lockeduplockedout

A key takeaway was the undeniable strain felt across our state due to the rising number of unhoused individuals, regardless of income bracket. The ripple effects touch every aspect of our community, from increased pressure on essential services to the heartbreaking reality of families, including children, sleeping on the streets due to insufficient shelter beds. The message was clear: housing is a basic right, and it's imperative that we invest in solutions now. Every budget cut has a human impact, hindering the progress we've worked so hard to achieve. Let's not falter in our efforts. We strongly object to the recent Supreme Court decision on the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson – a #ruling that will make it easier for authorities to punish people for experiencing homelessness, even when there is no adequate #shelter.   The Court’s June 28 decision runs counter to our deeply held belief that this nation’s laws and policies should protect the most vulnerable people in our community – not threaten them.   At Abode, our stance is clear: Homelessness is not a crime, it is a crisis – one that is a result of #systemic failures that have produced fewer than 24 affordable units for every 100 people who need them.   Criminalizing homelessness is wrong – in every way. It is cruel, ineffective, costly, and it creates unnecessary barriers to fighting poverty. Arresting or fining people who don’t have a home worsens cycles of #homelessness and makes it more difficult to find solutions.   We respectfully but wholeheartedly condemn the Supreme Court’s ruling on the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. The proposed bill advocates for the recognition of ADEQUATE HOUSING AS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT FOR ALL Australians by mandating the federal government to develop a comprehensive and long-term strategy to reform and improve Australia’s struggling issues of housing affordability, availability, and homelessness. If passed, it would establish a 10-year plan, ensuring sustained progress beyond political cycles. NRCDV is disappointed and concerned by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last week in Grants Pass v. Johnson. The Court’s decision to allow criminalization of homelessness will penalize victims of domestic violence for making the often life-saving decision to flee from a violent partner. We join our partner organizations in the gender-based violence and homelessness movements in their call to state and local governments: Do not criminalize survival. Uphold the rights of people who are unhoused, including survivors of domestic violence.
