The Genuine Parts Company's U.S. automotive sales declined approximately 1% in the third quarter with comparable sales down 2.9%, which includes the negative impact of one less selling day year-over-year. Also, the third quarter of 2022 included the benefit of sales associated with NAPA Expo, a sales event held roughly every five years. This negatively impacted year-over-year comparisons by an estimated 170 basis points. Collectively, these two factors represented approximately 340 basis points of headwind. Auto parts retailers are thriving due to high car prices and limited inventory. Likewise, more consumers are maintaining their current vehicles, boosting sales for companies like AutoZone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and NAPA Auto Parts. This trend is driving up demand for retail spaces too. "The major players within the space such as O'Reilly and AutoZone have done a great job in their expansion efforts, locating new stores and relocating older stores in high-traffic areas within new major retail developments," says Patrick Nutt, Executive Vice President of SRS Capital Markets. Stellantis is promising its U.S. dealers it will reduce its inventory by one-third through incentives and by repricing several high-volume models. Cox Automotive Inc. reports that in December, the Chrysler and Dodge brands had at least twice the industry average days’ supply of 70 days. Jeep and Ram were also well above average. The Genuine Parts Company’s automotive Global Automotive segment generated $3.46 billion in net sales for the quarter — an increase of 0.8% compared to a year ago but down 2.7% on a comparable-store basis up against an +8.0% comp a year ago. A blast from the past!! Nissan Motor Corporation continues its attempt to move old inventory (2023 models) with field staff calling dealers to take vehicles. Nissan dealers are largely unprofitable in North America and its committed dealers continue to deal with the OEM's dysfunctional culture that is decades old. Kudos to them for sticking with the brand, but the franchise value is among the lowest in the industry and there are no indications to see it rectified.
