In a world where the glass ceiling is still a reality for many, the recent "Barbie" movie has sparked a powerful conversation about women's empowerment and breaking patriarchal norms. 🔹 Inspired by this movement, I've explored how these themes resonate within the real estate industry, particularly at the Inman Connect New York conference. 🌐🎬 🔹 From the "What Moves Her" session to my interview with the trailblazing Sarah Friar of NextDoor, this piece dives into the real-life challenges and triumphs of women in real estate. #DEI 🚩 The shift away from affirmative action and concerns over legal scrutiny pose significant challenges for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. For anyone that's gotten to know me, they know how hard I've pushed towards more female representation in the #avproduction industry, so much so that I lost contracts and business over it. That didn't stop me, however it did make me think of different ways to navigate this challenge and improve adoption rates, which brought up the need for rebranding and refocusing which might be beneficial not just for the #AV industry, which is and has been male dominated for as long as I've been alive. So, here are some thoughts I've been ruminating on in regards to #diversityinAV, #diversity in general, #equity and #inclusion: 1. Focus on Inclusive Excellence Shift the narrative from meeting quotas to fostering an environment where diverse talents are naturally drawn and retained. This includes creating cultures of belonging, where every individual feels valued and able to contribute fully. 2. Broaden the Definition Move beyond race and gender to include diversity of thought, experience, and background. This can help companies and events demonstrate a commitment to diversity without focusing solely on demographics. 3. Transparency and Accountability Instead of setting quotas, set transparent goals for creating inclusive environments. Measure progress through engagement surveys and retention rates of diverse employees. 4. Education and Training Invest in ongoing education about unconscious bias, cultural competence, and the benefits of a diverse workforce. This helps build a more inclusive culture from the ground up. Partnerships Collaborate with organizations that support underrepresented groups in the professional world. This can help in creating a more diverse talent pipeline without relying on quotas. 6. Innovative Recruitment Utilize recruitment strategies that reduce bias, like blind applications and diverse hiring panels. 7. New Terminology Instead of DEI, consider terms like "Inclusive Excellence," "Unity in Diversity," or "Collective Strength." This rebranding can help shift the focus from compliance to the inherent benefits of a diverse workforce. In all, it's about creating a culture where diversity is naturally embedded and celebrated, not just a target to hit. What do these images have in common? A potential answer could be: "Colours". Another one would refer to the fact that both photos depict an industry event: The SVG Women Event in Glasgow and the coming NAB Show in Las Vegas (Tesla tunnel). Why are these two events connected? They both remind us about the importance of community.  It’s really important that in the broadcast industry, we start to view others in our industry as a part of our community, not at-arms-length competitors. Technologically, financially, personally, when we engage in collaborative and not merely competitive action, we all benefit. Arsenal Women are making history, with an all-female team running the grounds and tech operations in the upcoming North London Derby on 3 March. This momentous occasion is a testament to the club's commitment to driving change in women's sport. The club partnered with the WSL, Women in Football and the Grounds Management Association to make this happen. It's inspiring to see women and organisations collectively come together as a driving force and taking action for the betterment of women's sport, both on and off the pitch. Change is more powerful when we come together to achieve our goals. Strength is in numbers. Power is in unity. This isn't a trend. This is the present. This is the future. Women in sport. Women in business. Women leading the way in sport, business, and society. Engaging in sports during youth significantly shapes the future landscape of sports consumption, and the outlook for women's sports is especially promising—a noteworthy addition to the narrative. Aspen Institute Sports & Society's recent annual analysis focused on the trends influencing sports engagement among youth aged 6-17, revealing a compelling development in 2023: The dynamics of sports participation are shifting, with an uptick among girls and a decline among boys. In 2022, boys (40%) continued to engage in sports more consistently than girls (35%), based on national data from the SFIA - Sports & Fitness Industry Association. However, the intriguing shift is evident: a decade ago, half of boys regularly participated in sports, while the current participation rate for girls marks the highest since 2013. Additionally, Deloitte predicts that women’s elite sports will generate global revenues of US$1.28 billion in 2024. This is the first time that annual global revenues for women’s sport will have surpassed US$1 billion. Commercial revenue, which includes club sponsorships, partnerships, and merchandising sales, currently represents the largest share of total revenue (US$696 M, 55%). This is followed by broadcast (US$340 M, 27%), and matchday revenues (US$240 M, 18%). The two most valuable women’s sports are projected to be football (US$555 M, 43%) and basketball (US$354 M, 28%), while the largest geographical markets in 2024 are forecast to be North America (US$670 M, 52%) and Europe (US$181 M, 14%).
