You can still find the truth if you seek it. “Corporate Karen” accents, jolly, happy-go lucky high pitched tones, laughing at corny jokes, and yes, over the top interest in house pets are all types of code switching blacks use to “comfortably” move anywhere. Never forget no matter how you talk, the hobbies you decide to pick up, the number of Patagonia vest you wear or the docker khakis owned, no one is “not seeing” your color. People compare their interactions with you, and associate these experiences with other people that look like you. And, you’re definitely only going to be allowed to go so far. Think about the NFL, a league where if all the black people left, it would literally be the most boring sport on the planet, yet not one owner of a team is black. The combine is like a plantation auction, they got in trouble for kneeling for an anthem, that if you sing “entirely”, is bigoted towards blacks but, we go around it by partially singing the anthem. Most “patriots” aren’t even aware there is more to the National Anthem that what we sing. The problem is that this becomes too much of a conversation. I believe in the power of narratives and how it helps us tell hard truths. I’ve been a fan of this woman for a long time, and now that I know she was a former track athlete like me, it helps me relate even more. Stories create connections and humanize who we are beyond what we see. I applaud the way Tracee held space and used her artistry to share the hurdles she has endured as an entrepreneur and multihyphenate. There are so many gems in here, but don’t miss this one: “Affirmative action has been shut down. DEI programs are being demolished. Hollywood is pulling back on its interest on diversity.
