The Equality and Human Rights Commission's reasonable steps include preventative measures, regular training, reporting systems and risk assessments. Failure to do so means that the Equality and Human Rights Commission will have the power to take enforcement action against the employer. If you don’t take the necessary steps, you could face serious consequences, including tribunals increasing compensation for employees by up to 25%. As we celebrate Labor Day today in the United States—marking the importance of workers’ rights—there are still thousands of people in this country who are exploited for labor through force, fraud, or coercion. Labor trafficking can occur on farms or construction sites, in factories or hotels. Many people still experience what the labor movement fought against: low to no wages, long hours, and dangerous conditions. Today’s migration policies and under-regulated workplaces, often in low-wage sectors, further contribute to this crisis. Widespread knowledge and action is needed to end this human rights crime. When it comes to respecting and protecting human rights, labor rights are a crucial part of the equation. The recent George building collapse is a tragic reminder of this. As reported, the collapse was due to multiple violations, including unsafe working conditions that put workers' lives at risk, exploitative practices, and abuse of immigrant workers. It is essential for businesses to prioritize the safety and well-being of their workers and ensure that they are treated fairly and with dignity.
