Next Generation Products Need Additives - Are you ready for the generational shift in the fuel market? Next Gen products (also called biofuels) are fuels produced from renewable raw materials such as plant residues or waste. These include biodiesel, rapeseed oil, ethanol, methane from biogas, but also synthetic fuels from biomass. In the automotive and petroleum industries, synthetic fuels are very popular because of their similarity to petrol and diesel, and they also shine with relatively simple adaptations when used in modern combustion engines. But that's not all: biofuels make a significant contribution to climate protection, have a similarly high energy density to conventional fuels and do not limit the range of vehicles. #nextgenproducts #additives #erc #ercadditiv #fuelmarket

Interesting to see such news, as we have seen more details coming out in the last year around areas like SAF and this further highlights the shift towards cleaner energy and fuels supply. Will be interesting to see how many other energy companies move in this direction in the months ahead.
Under growing pressure to decarbonize, leading oil majors are moving towards biofuels. According to Rystad Energy’s research, these six oil majors have announced a total of 43 biofuel projects that are either already operational or are targeted to start up by 2030. While investments span various biofuel products, including biodiesel and ethanol, the focus is clearly on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which are expected to make up nearly 90% of the projected biofuel production. Benchmarking bp, Chevron, Eni, Shell, TotalEnergies & ExxonMobil on #biofuel (#biodiesel, #ethanol, #HVO, #SAF) capacity. Among the leading companies, BP stands out with the largest announced production capacity in its pipeline, reaching a combined 130,000 bpd of ethanol and HVO/SAF capacity and positioning BP as a global frontrunner in the bioenergy space. While ExxonMobil is lagging on this chart, it has the most aggressive target of 200,000 bpd by 2030. Analyzing the implementation of these investments, which could add a combined 286,000 barrels per day (bpd) of production capacity, reveals that 31 projects are greenfield developments. Six involve co-processing — integrating bio feedstock into existing crude-oil refineries to produce a blended feedstock — while another six are full conversions of refineries to facilities dedicated exclusively to biofuel production. Co-processing stands out as a cost-effective option that allows companies to leverage existing infrastructure and reduce upfront investment, making it an appealing choice for oil majors entering the biofuels market.

In the news on 27 December 2024 | Marine Biofuels – Demand increases for drop-in fuel VPS provides a timely update on Biofuels testing and use. Biofuel is proving to be a popular choice to reduce CO2 emissions. As a “drop-in” fuel existing storage, transfer and delivery systems need no change. Engine operations do not appear to be impacted yet. As demand increases, there may be more quality concerns from unscrupulous suppliers. Testing and monitoring in accordance with your fuel testing agency is recommended. Calorific value and sustainability criteria of these new fuels need careful consideration too.
